What we aim to solve
High companion pet euthanasia rates in our area/state, in shelters, due to abundant pet overpopulation. High influx annually of new puppies and kittens born to unaltered pets. General lack of public knowledge about pet overpopulation and the resources available in the community to prevent this.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Athens Area Humane Society Adoption Program
AAHS houses and cares for homeless cats and dogs while trying to find a suitable home for them. We average over 1100 adoptions per year, and we are a no kill, limited admission shelter. Although we do take some owner surrenders from the public, 95% of our animals come from animal control facilities in the surrounding counties. We complete about the same number of cat and dog adoptions each year.
Athens Area Humane Society Spay & Neuter and Wellness Clinic
Started in November of 2007, the Athens Regional Spay/Neuter Center is a program designed to combat pet overpopulation at the heart of the matter. We complete over 5,000 a year.
Our purpose is to provide low cost, high quality spays and neuters to the population of Athens-Clarke County and surrounding areas. Our objective is to offer a non-lethal solution to pet overpopulation so that we can lead the way in creating a no-kill community.

A qualified team of veterinarian staff for spay/neuter.
Qualified and dedicated adoption counselors to match animals with families.
Facilities to accomplish our goals.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since 2014, we have successfully facilitated over 7,000 adoptions and 25,000 surgeries, with our numbers continually increasing.
AAHS moved into a larger property in 2021, which will increase our capacity, and enable us to offer more low-cost veterinary services to the public.
