Mission

Our preservation mission addresses the proper care and handling of materials; storage and environmental control; disaster preparedness and recovery; the repair, reformatting, and conservation of damaged items; and collection security. NCPC supports the preservation of information content and the medium as artifact, in new and traditional formats for present and future generations.

Information and Consultations
NCPC offers free preservation information and consultations via telephone and email with referrals to respected experts in the field.


Internet Resources
NCPC maintains an open access Web site with links to preservation standards, guidelines, and best practices from leading organizations and institutions.


News Service
NCPC distributes preservation news via a listserv available to collections professionals and the general public. News includes announcements regarding disaster planning, preservation education and training, preservation grants, and other preservation initiatives.


Continuing Education Workshops
NCPC provides affordable continuing education workshops on a variety of preservation topics for personnel in libraries, archives, museums, historic sites, and other heritage institutions. Workshops have included preservation management; archives preservation, disaster planning and response; and basic, intermediate, and advanced book repair.


Annual Conference
NCPC sponsors an annual conference that addresses a selected preservation topic. The conference attracts librarians, archivists, museum curators, historic site managers, and other personnel from heritage institutions throughout North Carolina. We often have attendees from other states as well. Past conferences have addressed book and paper conservation; preservation of recorded sound collections; photograph preservation; collection security; digital preservation; mold; and floods.


Preservation Grants
NCPC awards preservation grants to assist North Carolina libraries, archives, museums, historic sites, and other heritage institutions improve the preservation of their collections. These collections may include books, manuscripts, documents, journals, photographs, film, sound recordings, maps, architectural drawings, art, and artifacts. Grants may be used for preservation and conservation assessments, preservation consultations, preservation projects, environmental monitoring equipment, storage furniture and enclosures, conservation tolls and equipment, conservation treatment, and preservation education and training. The maximum award is $2,000.00.
