Mission

Conscience International's Mission is to respond to the world's most urgent humanitarian needs by partnering with organizations and people of conscience. Through cooperative networking, CI creates programs and provides services for the relief of hunger, disease, suffering, homelessness, and the denial of human rights internationally. CI supplies food, medicine, and shelter to refugees and disaster victims, transports and delivers such aid, sponsors emergency and long-term relief and development programs, and educates people about poverty and medical emergencies.

CI prefers to work alongside community leaders in the affected areas, seeking to implement CI's plans in accordance with the cultural and civic responses already in place. CI seeks to leverage its network of volunteers and donors to respond quickly in regions that are isolated geographically or politically.

Many of CI's volunteer leaders and staff are US-based personnel who concentrate their efforts in their "homelands" where they know and appreciate the languages and customs.

Most CI programs begin with an assessment of an apparent humanitarian need in the given country or region. Analysis is focused on determining what other volunteer organizations are already accomplishing and discovering what national leadership (especially community-based groups) have identified as the most compelling needs remaining to be addressed. Whenever possible, the materials and manpower needed to respond to the most urgent needs are supplied locally. For example, whenever medical teams are needed, the most experienced teams are enlisted from within CI's considerable network and are sent to the locations of need not only to provide emergency medical assistance but also to learn from and to train the national medical responders in longterm medical skills and practices.

CI relies largely on voluntary activities, on foundation and relief agency grants, and on in-kind contributions from interested donors in conveying gifts from the donor directly to recipients or to reputable in-country organizations.

Conscience International is based on the following principles: "I must follow my conscience; I am my brother's keeper; one person can make a difference; I must respond to people's needs, especially in emergencies; I must work cooperatively with others; I must ignore political barriers, because conscience is above politics."

Summary of Longterm Humanitarian Assistance

Since 1991 Conscience International has organized and led projects that have distributed food, clothing, vehicles, shelter, medical assistance, medical training, public health training, including AIDS awareness, trauma counseling, technical consultations, and financial support to refugees, needy families, community service organizations, and hospitals and service agencies in over thirty-five countries, including some of the places most difficult to access during and after wars and natural disasters: Sudan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and others.

Population(s) Served

Response to community leaders who identified the need for construction of school in a remote village

Population(s) Served

Initiated services via a mobile clinic at Bokolmayo Camp on the Ethiopia-Somalia border;
Conducted surgical program in Addis Ababa for children suffering crippling spine abnormalities. Program is ongoing.

Population(s) Served

Medical re-supply for hospital in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria

Population(s) Served

Manage transition camps in Greece; provide food and non-food items for refugees in Iraq and Turkey; conduct trauma counseling training for Iraqi and Syrian refugees and IDPs

Population(s) Served

Following decades of humanitarian work in Iraq, primarily in implementing medical training programs at hospitals in Baghdad, Basra, and Mosul, Conscience International shifted its focus to the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Even during the Covid-19 lock down, our team leader from the US traveled there and to Mount Sinjar, and delivered aid to refugee camps devastated by floods and fires, building retaining walls and sanitary facilities and providing mattresses and blankets to those left destitute. We delivered truckloads of mattresses and blankets to those made homeless over again by the fires.

Population(s) Served

This program was initiated in the central Plateau State of Nigeria near its capital, Jos, but reached people all over Nigeria. After years of working with the Jos University Hospital to supply containers of medicine, our focus shifted during the Covid-19 lock down to feeding thousands of people all over Nigeria in partnership with a local organization that mainly served the handicapped. When the food arrived, many of the handicapped people came with their entire families to receive the distributions.

Population(s) Served

By supporting local teams during the Covid-19 lock down, Conscience International has dug over twenty wells in villages near Kaduna in central Nigeria. These wells provide clean drinking water that will prevent widespread infectious diarrhea that is a prime cause of the alarming increase in infant mortality.

Population(s) Served

Conscience International medical personnel are serving to treat Covid-19 patients in national hospitals and field hospitals and to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) for physicians and first responders who could not work without such equipment. Teams are also continuing to set up Covid-19 testing locations and providing masks to the public.

Population(s) Served

As in 2010, when Conscience International responded to the giant earthquake in Port-Au-Prince that killed 220,000 people, so also when an even stronger quake struck Haiti's Tiburon peninsula on August 14, 2021, our relief team reached the remote disaster area within three days. Some of the villages where we work saw every home flattened. Our teams are distributing tenting material and food to those affected. Ultimately the project will focus on shelter assistance, as in 2010, when over 1,000 volunteers helped us build 189 permanent homes from the rubble.
