Our 2010-2011 Theatrical Season
Fall 2010
Once Upon a Rhyme
This audience participation show for children ages 4-7 was scheduled to tour to schools and daycares during the Fall semester. The play includes several children's stories and songs and is designed to be performed by two actors and a musician. Unfortunately, the director hired to do the show did not complete his work, and the show had to be canceled. The theatre company lost a semester as a result.
The spring 2011 show was The Emperor's New Clothes. This play had a wonderful cast and was an artistic success. However, the number of bookings was not as high as anticipated, due to the FCAT preparation in many schools in the early Spring and the economic situation in the schools.
The Creative Drama programs for disadvantaged children continued throughout the school year with great success. Many sessions were conducted during the Fall and several in January--March, limited again by the FCAT. The children who are tutored in the schools for many weeks for the FCAT are the same children we target as audiences.
Play Performances in Elementary Schools
Florida Children’s Repertory Theatre tours plays to area elementary schools and provides weekend performances for the public. These plays last approximately one hour and are for children from kindergarten through fifth grade. Two plays are presented during each school year. Most schools are cutting back on their arts programs, and many cannot afford field trips to the theatre, so a performance at the school fulfills a need and reaches many children.
The plays and other activities for the 2011-2012 school year will be decided upon by our new Managing Director when hired. The final choices will be available in several weeks. In all probability, we will need to use the Fall semester for re-organization and planning and not produce a play until Spring 2012.
Another part of the theatre’s overall program is the continuing classes of Creative Drama led by our instructors during extended-day sessions in Orange County elementary schools. This activity is directed to economically disadvantaged children has been sponsored by grants from Walt Disney World. This year we will be looking for other sponsors. We were fortunate to receive Disney grants for three years as Disney doesn't often give consecutive grants to the same organization.
