Mission

Dignity U Wear helps people in need by providing new size-specific clothing to our partnering nonprofit social service agencies and school districts across the nation.

Notes from the nonprofit

Dignity U Wear was founded in 2000 by Henri Landwirth, a philanthropist, Korean War veteran and Holocaust survivor. As a young boy, during the war Henri suffered the loss of his parents. After years of imprisonment, he was liberated. He was free, but alone and homeless.

Unbroken by his circumstances, Henri immigrated to the U.S. and worked tirelessly to become a successful entrepreneur. One day while visiting a homeless shelter, he asked what he could do to help. One man answered, “Sir, we need underwear." That day Henri went to a local store and purchased all the underwear he could find. From that conversation, Dignity U Wear was born and since that day millions of people of all ages have been served the gift of dignity through fitted new clothing. Dignity U Wear works with hundreds of non-profit social service agencies and school districts located across the nation.

Dignity U Wear has forged close relationships with leading clothing manufacturers, as new clothing is sent directly to our warehouse in Jacksonville, Florida. Next, the clothing is sorted and boxed by style, size and gender. Clothes are now ready to be re-packaged for agencies that place requests based on needs.

The process is efficient and utilizes volunteers from all over. Dignity U Wear is the only agency of its kind—serving nonprofit organizations directly with brand-new clothing that is shipped according to size.

“I believe in human dignity as the source of national purpose," said President John F. Kennedy.

Families in crisis, the homeless, and veterans are the primary recipients. However, the goal is to never turn away someone in need, particularly those affected by disaster or other misfortune. After all, for the disadvantaged, getting a step up when life knocks one down is crucial. Whether an individual is focused on getting an education, obtaining a new job, or, as in the case of many veterans, transitioning from military to civilian life, Dignity U Wear believes even small gestures can pay big dividends.

"Our society is quick to judge based on appearances," says Jamie Mullis, Volunteer Relations Coordinator. “We strive to take this out of the equation and give people in need a fighting chance to make a better life, to feel hopeful for a new beginning. After eight years with Dignity I know that we make a huge impact on those served and on the thousands of volunteers who help us help them. Henri believed in taking the hate and turning it love, something we strive to do daily."

Dignity U Wear has donated millions of units of new product nationwide to millions of individuals in need. Together with apparel donors, volunteers, and financial supporters, we provide self-confidence and dignity to those who need to feel connected, to be cared about and to then feel hopeful.

“I know what it is to be without food and clothing. I want to help people so they never know that pain," said Henri Landwirth from his book, Love and Hate.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Learning With Dignity

'Learning With Dignity' focuses on children in public school districts, with a primary focus in areas where we already have existing agency partners - the U.S. eastern sector. The poverty rate in the public school system across the nation is on average between 30 and 40 percent (Washington Post 2015). What's even more alarming is 1.4 million children are deemed homeless, according to Department of Education (2015). These numbers doubling since 2007. Over 50 percent qualify for free or reduced lunch programs, according to a KIDS Count report published in 2016. These numbers are based on students pre-kindergarten to grade 12, the same age range 'Learning With Dignity' focuses on when delivering new size-specific clothing.

The involvement of community partnerships to provide intervention strategies and innovative programs is needed to effectively address the everyday issues facing struggling students. Also, access to social programs are often times sparse. Through our partner schools districts we are able to directly reach students in need at no cost to the district or child served. If we are serious about giving students a meaningful education we have to do the things that overcome the damages of poverty. Providing for basic needs to keep kids engaged, and self confident require a great deal of things, and we believe with the appropriate new size-specific school clothing is just one more tool in the wrap-around efforts being made currently.

Population(s) Served

This program focuses on serving the gift of dignity to those having had suffered domestic abuse, gone through human trafficking, the homeless, or those who have lost it all due to an illness. Our goal is to help those with a much needed hand-up (not out) so they may feel more confident, connected and loved and feel so good inside and out they can land that new job. We believe even in these small gestures lives can be changed. The gift of dignity is just that important.

Population(s) Served

Serving With Dignity focuses on veterans leaving the military and reentering civilian life. Dignity U Wear truly believes the heroes in need – deserve it. Only one in 50 people at any given time is serving our country – protecting us. Less than two percent of the population is in place to defend this great nation. Often times, due to a number of reasons – PTSD, being away for so long, trying to figure out what exactly they can do, or have the skill to do and of course for other reasons, life can be hard for these heroes coming back home.

At Dignity U Wear, we want to help and this is why we established Serving With Dignity. These veterans deserve the resources needed to reintegrate into society, which can often times be difficult to navigate and seem alien after their experiences aboard, on the front lines or otherwise serving our country. We can never truly show our veterans our appreciation, but we must try.

Our veterans clothing program has three main components: Suits for Soldiers, Heroes To Work, and Helping Homeless Heroes.

• 9% of veterans are unemployed and for younger veterans, the number is even higher
• 24.3% of veterans ages 18-24 are unemployed

Dignity U Wear is honored to work with our partnering non-profit social service agencies that give returning soldiers the assistance needed. Programs include: education opportunities, counseling assistance, mentoring, job placement — and of course we are providing new clothes. The more support we can find, the more veterans we can serve.

Warriors often resist wearing appropriate business clothes and often times argue the need. When reconstructing a new life, buying a new suit isn’t always high in priority, however, the transformation once properly attired is very dramatic. The warriors carry themselves differently and feel extremely proud. New clothes help them recalibrate their hope for the next chapter.

➢ Dignity U Wear’s Suits for Soldiers - Suited for the Next Mission is designed to support veterans returning back to civilian employment who are working through educational and/or vocational training programs to better transition their military skills to a civilian work environment.

➢ Dignity U Wear’s Heroes to Work is designed to recognize that not all veterans coming back into civilian life needs a suit, so this program helps veterans who are underemployed or unemployed by supplying brand new work appropriate clothing – khakis, dress slacks, career shirts, ties, belts – that will assist in securing long-term financial stability for themselves and their families.

➢ Dignity U Wear’s Helping Homeless Heroes is designed to assist as many adult homeless veterans as possible. It is estimated that 12 percent are in fact homeless. We work to provide homeless veterans, through our agency partners, with basic necessities as they get back on their feet.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Dignity U Wear has donated millions of units of new product nationwide to millions of individuals in need. Together with apparel donors, volunteers, and financial supporters, we provide self-confidence and dignity to those who need to feel connected, to be cared about and to then feel hopeful.

“I believe in human dignity as the source of national purpose," said President John F. Kennedy.

“I know what it is to be without food and clothing. I want to help people so they never know that pain. I started Dignity U Wear in 2000 because I was in the concentration camps for five years with no clothes," says Landwirth.

“After I left the camps, I was 18 years old and was homeless. I promised myself that one-day, God willing, I would be able to help other people not to suffer as much as I did. I know what it is to be without food and clothing," he says. “I want to help other people so they never know that pain."

Dignity U Wear works closely with many nonprofits, businesses and volunteers and we truly believe this collaborative strategy pays bid dividends when it comes to serving thousands in need each year. We exist to serve other nonprofits and we work on building strong partnerships, getting to know every aspect of our partners work, therefore connecting at a deeper level.

Our strategies are clear, serve those in need as identified by those who know these people best...the agencies that serve them each and every day.

We know there are so many more people in need, and we must try to help them. We haven't been able to serve more than 200,000 people in one year and our goal for this upcoming year is to serve 200,000+, the more support we have the more likely this will in fact become a reality.

In 2018 we are on target to have served the gift of dignity to two million people. Amazing!
