Food Recovery and Redistribution

River Cities Harvest, Inc. is a transfer agent for the collection and distribution of perishable and non-perishable foods. This program serves over 40 agencies in 5 counties in Northeast Kentucky.

Population(s) Served

River Cities Harvest, through partnerships with the Summit Federal Correctional Facility and the Boyd County Extension Agency, operate a Master Gardner's program on site at Summit FCI. Through this program, inmates gain their Master Gardner Certifications and skills that can be transferred into jobs upon release. The garden, in turn, provides thousands of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables each year that are then provided to the 40+ partner agencies.

In 2018, a Greenhouse project was launched. This program takes advantage of on-site greenhouse facilities and also provided new high-tunnel greenhouse facilities to the prison so that vegetables could be grown in the off-season. As 2018 is a test year, the goal of the program is to provide the fresh produce needs of the local soup kitchen, Ashland Community Kitchen. The goal is to ultimately be able to provide fresh, free vegetables at least to our partner agencies that cook on a daily basis, year round.
