What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The problem is lack of, and diminishing access to and the quality care in the Southeastern United States. Preparing medical doctors to provide quality care is not keeping pace with demand. This disparity exists more in the southeastern region of the United States than in any other region in the country.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

SMA seeks to support the healthcare system by providing access to high quality (accredited) continuing medical education, by publishing valuable and trustworthy peer-reviewed scientific research through our medical journal The Southern Medical Journal, and by fostering relationships, collegiality, and teamwork through live educational and social events.

Our strategy is to work with physicians-led multidisciplinary and interprofessional teams serving in different settings (practice and academia), to develop, validate and publish quality educational activities that improve knowledge, competency, and outcomes. These activities also promote fun, social interaction and engagement. Teaching, learning, and fun.

SMA has an experienced staff with an average of more than 20 years experience in developing accredited medical education. Since 1983, SMA has been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) as a provider of continuing medical education for physicians. In November 2018, SMA was resurveyed by the ACCME and awarded reaccredited as a provider of continuing medical education. The Association complements this capability with a team of meeting planners, project managers, grant specialists, travel agents, software developers, and multimedia professionals who can provide educational solutions ranging from large, live conferences to webcasts to online courseware.

The Southern Medical Association was founded in 1906 as a scientific body of physicians dedicated to fostering the art and science of medicine through education. SMA members' commitment to multidisciplinary, interprofessional education has endured for more than 100 years. Since 1906, members have supported SMA's mission through membership, donations, publishing, speaking, or directing educational programming. This support has been used to create thousands of hours of educational programming, the publication of more than 45,000 scientific peer-reviewed journal articles in the Southern Medical Journal, and investments of millions of dollars supporting scientific research grants and medical student scholarships.
