What we aim to solve
Nantucket has a child care crisis. Small Friends on Nantucket seeks to enhance the quality of life for families and meet the needs of working parents by providing the highest quality early education and care for the children of Nantucket year-round. Toward this end, Small Friends on Nantucket provides children ages three months through five years with an early education and care environment with trained and nurturing professionals.

Early Education
Small Friends on Nantucket is the only full time year round early education center on the island. Our school is a LEED gold certified campus with six classrooms, a great room meeting space and age appropriate outdoor play spaces for each age level. We have a proven track record for providing quality by trained teachers in a sustainable environment with convenient hours. Small Friends is open nine and one half hours a day, fifty one weeks a year. Working families, and in turn the island, rely on Small Friends.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to provide a nurturing and educationally rich environment for children ages three months through five years for a full day of care year round. Small Friends is open from 7:45 am to 5:15 pm 51 weeks per year which allows our parents to continuing working on the island providing essential services to the community.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Small Friends employs a fully staffed building with Massachusetts Early Education Certified teachers. We network with other organizations on island to provide special care to those students who need it. Our LEED gold certified campus is energy efficient and a truly pleasant environment with appropriate indoor and outdoor play spaces for each individual age group. Parents feel confident leaving their children with us while they participate in the work force.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Small Friends has been in operation since 1988 providing care for our community's youngest members. We have grown from a small one room rental in a church basement to our fully licensed center with extensive campus. Some of the first students at Small Friends are now bringing their children to school here.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Small Friends continues to grow from our humble beginnings in a church basement to a beautiful light filled environmentally friendly campus. We are completely enrolled with 70 students and we have a wait list of over 130. We are considering expanding in the future.
