NEW CANAAN LAND CONSERVATION TRUST, INC.
Protecting and Stewarding Open Space in New Canaan Since 1967
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The New Canaan Land Trust works to conserve open space, which is constantly threatened due to development and suburbanization. Once protected, we also work to ensure that our lands provide public and natural benefit. Nearly half of our acreage is open to the public with extensive walking trails, and all of our properties are sustainable managed to provide habitat for native flora and fauna. Finally, we work to engage the New Canaan community in our mission, and to install a conservation ethic across our town.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Open Space Protection
INFORMATION NOTE: The New Canaan Land Trust is organized to hold title, in perpetuity, to open space real properties. (See attached list) The public has access to all such properties, but the organization does not undertake specific programs. All expenditures by the organization are for the maintenance and protection of the properties.
Summer Stewards Internship
A summer internship for local high school students designed to engage participants in land stewardship projects that benefit the land trust and their community.
Open Space Stewardship
In addition to permanently protecting open space, the New Canaan Land Trust stewards its properties through the restoration of wildlife habitat, construction of trails for passive recreation, and more.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The New Canaan Land Trust works to conserve parcels of open space in our community and spread a conservation ethic across our community.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our land conservation strategies are primarily focused around working with private landowners who are interested in donating land, and seeing it preserved in perpetuity. We have also embarked at multiple, successful, capital campaigns where a purchase was warranted. Once protected, we ensure the sustainable stewardship of our lands by working with professionals to provide exemplary wildlife habitat and build and maintain trail systems. Finally, we work to engage the community in our work by hosting various events and programs throughout the year.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The New Canaan Land Trust relies primarily on contributions from members, foundations, and business to achieve its goals. Specific projects are frequently sponsored or underwritten, while general operating costs are supported by our members.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The New Canaan Land Trust has accomplished much over its 50 year history, including the protection of nearly 400 acres, the development of multiple events and a programs, the establishment of new meadows and improved woodlands. We will continue on this track, ensuring that New Canaan's remaining open space is protected for generations to come, and cared for in a way that benefits the community and our native wildlife.
