What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group, was founded in 1991 to foster a movement towards a more sustainable farming and food system – one that is ecologically sound, economically viable, socially just and humane. We function as a regional entity, working with and through hundreds of associated organizations across 13 southern states. By building partnerships, sharing information and conducting analysis, we transform isolated ideas and innovations into practical tools and approaches for widespread use.

Southern SAWG focuses attention on issues and differing perspectives around food production, marketing, and distribution, and brings sustainable solutions to farmers, families and communities in the southern U.S. We have provided education and outreach to more than 10,000 farmers and food advocates in our 20+ year history.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Sustainable Agriculture Conference

This is our annual event, providing a forum to learn about sustainable farming techniques and marketing strategies, community food systems, and federal farm policies and programs that promote sustainable agriculture. This event also provides producers, researchers, information providers, concerned consumers and community organizers the opportunity to build networks, strengthen alliances, and celebrate the achievements of Southern sustainable farmers.

Population(s) Served

Southern SAWG will facilitate Sustainable Food Systems Learning Tours in select areas that educate participants on how communities are building regional food systems that supply sustainably-produced food for their residents. Focusing on increasing direct market opportunities for farms, the tours provide models for other communities.

The overall goal of this project is to equip participants, including Cooperative Extension agents, USDA field personnel, NGO technical assistance providers, and other agricultural and community development professionals with the tools and resources to provide more effective technical support to farmers and community members who are developing or strengthening local, sustainable food systems.

Population(s) Served

Southern SAWG assists in educating constituents, decision makers, and other supporters about sustainable agriculture and the impact that agricultural policies have on food, farmers, communities, and the earth. We help generate alternatives to currently unsustainable federal programs.

While working to improve the availability of healthy food in Southern communities, our ultimate goal is to create a food and agriculture system that is more economically viable for farmers, ecologically sound, and socially just, for all involved.
