What we aim to solve
CANDLE, Inc. is working to attract volunteers and attendees to restart the parent/child Reality Tour Drug Prevention Program across four sites in Western Pennsylvania post Covid. In addition, since the federal government took down the website that listed Reality Tour and all prevention programs, we must find a way to make our Reality Tour Program Model known and available to communities .
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Reality Tour Parent/Child Drug Prevention Program
During the Reality Tour presentation parents and children 'witness' the effects of drug abuse as they view dramatic scenes introduced by the 'voice of the addict'. Scenes depict arrest, imprisonment, overdose and a funeral. Everyone attending is assigned a 'drug addiction' complete with their 'story of addiction' including gateway drugs. Youth trace their handprints on the Reality Tour banner as a drug-free commitment. Question and answer sessions with law enforcement and addicts in recovery, allows for interaction. Photographs of teens are taken upon arrival, digitally morphed into an unattractive likeness, and then returned at the program's end. The photos serve as a reminder of the haunting, progressively deteriorating, real mug shot photos of an addict displayed during the tour. Law enforcement educates on emerging drugs like methamphetamine or any drug that is a problem in the community.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The goal of the nonprofit CANDLE, Inc. is to reach as many families as possible with our memorable 'Reality Tour' prevention experience by delivery of the program in four sites in PA to reach hundreds of families and to also reach thousands more families with replications of our program beyond replications currently in nine states.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
CANDLE, Inc. maintains a website that offers a video introduction to Reality Tour. Reality Tour developer Norma Norris hosts webinars for communities. Outreach to civic organizations via speaking engagements at meetings and conferences is continual. Consultations with officers of civic clubs are offered to assess their readiness to be involved in a prevention effort.
CANDLE is active on social media. A team of digital marketers is engaged to tell the Reality Tour story and build awareness for prevention.
Our partnerships with universities attract talented interns who gain experience and advance the mission of CANDLE, Inc. during their service. The most talented students are retained on a contract basis.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
CANDLE, Inc. is equipped to provide a program model to every community that wants to replicate a consequence-driven prevention experience for families to attend. The Reality Tour Program Model is offered as a download.
CANDLE, Inc. currently has replications of Reality Tour throughout the US that are managed by the non-profit via online trainings and private consultations.
CANDLE has attained a Google AdGrant and hired a profession to manage our online attraction via key words and ads.
CANDLE updates program content continually to keep abreast of changing drug trends. A complete update to statistics and content occurs every 2 years.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
From the first grassroots Reality Tour presented in 2003 and the establishment of the nonprofit CANDLE, Inc. in 2004 the program has grown to reach families in 9 states and impacted over 50,000+ families. Reality Tour has progressed from a grassroots effort to evidence-based status and was accepted to the federal government's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) in 2009 - an accomplishment almost unheard of for a grassroots effort.
