What we aim to solve
Animals throughout Louisiana are suffering due to overpopulation and homelessness, cruelty and neglect, and lack of access to proper care. Additionally, many surrounding (and rural) areas lack adequate funding and education to establish, develop and implement best practices in humane welfare.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Animal Adoptions
Adopting a pet is an amazing way to show love to an animal in need and brings so much love to you in return. Browse our list of adoptable animals on our website or stop by our state of the art Animal Resource Center to meet our available pets
Community Clinic
Launched in 1924, the Louisiana SPCA Community Clinic has grown far beyond our wildest imagination. What originally started off as a very small endeavor, has now grown into an 8,000 square foot state-of-the-art veterinary clinic. With 5 exam rooms, 2 surgical suites, a dedicated heartworm treatment wing, on-site pharmacy and so much more, the new Community Clinic is able to service even more pets in the Greater New Orleans community. While our mission is still rooted in spay/neuter, our services are always expanding and we’re proud to offer discounted services to pet parents regardless of what parish they live in.
Humane Education and Youth Programs
Youth humane education reinforces character development skills such as kindness, compassion, empathy and responsibility. From caring for the family pet to taking action to prevent animal suffering, students become active participants in helping animals and others at an early age. Enhancing a student's understanding that animals are living, feeling beings to be treated with respect and compassion is a very important lesson in empathy and respect for others.
TNR Feral Cat Program
The most humane and effective way to control feral cat populations is TNR, or Trap, Neuter, Return. Because TNR is less expensive than removing and euthanizing feral cats, TNR saves taxpayers money while saving cats' lives at the same time.
Lost and Found
Losing a pet is a terrifying experience that we hope you never find yourself in. However, if you do get separated from your pet, the Louisiana SPCA can guide you through the steps you should take to reunite with your pet.
Disaster Preparedness and Response
Just like other members of your household, emergency planning for your pets requires supplies and advance preparation. Pets are members of the family and should be included in disaster preparations.
Transport Program
There is an immediate opportunity to save more lives through transports. Due to the high animal overpopulation in our region, the Louisiana SPCA transports animals across the country for adoption. We work with reputable shelters and match them with cats and dogs that will be adopted by residents in their community.
Active Foster Program
The Louisiana SPCA offers 4 types of foster programs: Fast Track provides adoptable dogs a unique opportunity to meet potential adopters in the community. Kitten Krewe cares for kittens until they are at least 2 lbs so they can be spayed/neutered and placed for adoption. Transport fostering is needed to care for our animals going on transport to free up space for other adoptables. Medical or social fostering is for animals that require socialization or medical treatments before being available for adoption.
Lobbying for Animal Legislation
Each legislative session the Louisiana SPCA Government Relations committee works with state representatives to draft and support animal-related legislation.
Sheltering of Homeless Animals
As part of our mission, the Louisiana SPCA provides animal control and rescue services for Orleans Parish including food, housing and medical care for stray animals picked up by our Humane Law Officers or pets surrendered by their owners.

The Louisiana SPCA is the only contracted organization that provides animal control and rescue services for Orleans Parish.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Reduce the number of unwanted and homeless animals, seeking justice for victims of animal crimes, increasing the resources to pet owners, and promoting best practices in animal care.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Promoting spay/neuter, placing adoptable animals, investigating cruelty and supporting the prosecution of animal related crimes, providing veterinary care at an affordable price to pet owners, and promoting humane education.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We operate a high volume spay/neuter clinic as well as provide a number of other critical veterinary care services to the public, we promote onsite adoptions, partner with breed rescue groups for placements as well as other organizations to transport animals to shelters throughout the East Coast and Midwest for adoptions, and provide a highly trained investigative team doing Humane Law Enforcement for the City of New Orleans
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Over 70,000 animals have been spayed or neutered through our high volume clinic reopened after Hurricane Katrina, over 80% of all incoming animals are being placed in forever homes, and we have expanded the veterinary care services to provide access to as many people as possible.
What’s next? Bringing our services to pet owners who are unable to reach us due to financial and logistical challenges
