INTERNATIONAL ANESTHESIA RESEARCH SOCIETY

The IARS aims to lead the global anesthesiology community to advance the science and practice of medicine. We are focused solely on the advancement and support of education and scientific research related to anesthesiology. A core tenet of our mission is to encourage, stimulate, and fund ongoing anesthesia-related research projects that will enhance and advance the specialty. Through our various organizational channels, we disseminate current, state-of-the-art, basic and clinical research data in all areas of clinical anesthesia, including perioperative medicine, critical care, and pain management.

The IARS has five core strategies to accomplish our mission:

Our Scientific Journals, Anesthesia & Analgesia (A&A), and A&A Practice, are critical components of our educational strategy. A&A, a benefit of IARS membership, features peer-reviewed articles reporting on the latest advances in the science of the disciplines broadly related to anesthesiology. Timely topics include perioperative care, preoperative preparation, patient monitoring, and pain management, all with the goal of improving current and future patient therapies. A&A Practice publishes high quality case reports with a focus on important teaching points, novel educational tools, and innovative solutions regarding patient safety, pain, quality and performance improvement, and global health management issues. In addition, every journal offers our readers the opportunity to earn Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits.

Annual Meeting – our Annual Meeting allows thousands of anesthesiologists, residents and fellows to stay abreast of the latest scientific research. The meeting provides educational opportunities to attendees through symposia, panel presentations, poster/abstract presentations, problem based learning sessions, workshops and peer networking. The meeting also provides the opportunity to earn continuing medical education.

Our Research Awards program funds anesthesia related research. Dating back to 1983, the IARS established its Grants and Awards Program to further the scientific advancement of the anesthesiology specialty. To date, the IARS has funded more than 250 projects, totaling more than $16 million in research funding. Our current funding focuses on innovation and creativity through our primary award, the IARS Mentored Research Award.

Open Anestthesia.org is a unique and revolutionary approach to medical literature dissemination. It is a personalized learning tool for busy medical professionals worldwide, providing free, online content and podcasts to further the core competency of physicians, residents and fellows. It is a comprehensive resource that started with the broad goal of advancing graduate medical education in anesthesia and has expanded to the larger anesthesia provider community.

SmartTots is a multi-year collaborative effort designed to increase the safety of anesthetic and sedative drugs for the millions of children who undergo anesthesia and sedation each year. It is designed to close research gaps related to the effects of anesthetics on the developing brain, and ensure the safety of infants and young children undergoing anesthetics in medical procedures. Findings from SmartTots research studies will determine the safety of commonly used anesthetics, establish new practice guidelines, and potentially foster the development of new, safer anesthetics and sedatives.

Founded in 1922, the IARS is a small and agile organization. Over the course of our 102 year existence, our small, but capable staff has consistently met the critical needs of our members. In addition to our in-house staff, we have significant key strategic partners that allow us to successfully accomplish our goals and aims. For example, we partner with Wolters Klower Health (WK) to publish our journal. Our editorial board also contributes to the production of our journal, providing the skills, knowledge and experience to consistently create a top ranking publication that exceeds the expectations of our readers. The speakers and abstract presenters at our annual meetings are international thought leaders, offering exceptional expertise to our attendees. Our awards staff partner with our esteemed Research Committee who provide guidance and competency to ensure that critical, cutting edge research science is funded to further the discipline. We have affiliations with many sub-specialty organizations, partnering to support our mutually beneficial goals. Finally, membership staff partner with several technology companies to optimize our organization and provide fast, easy, modern member engagement.

IARS ensures that the current and next generation of Anesthesiologists have the tools and knowledge necessary to prepare and excel in their craft. We provide critical support and resources to physicians, residents, fellows and other health professionals in anesthesia related practice, to help them develop a deeper understanding of their specialty. Their medical career and continuing education is accelerated with IARS in their toolbox - our journal, meetings, and educational offerings are greatly utilized and highly regarded.

The advances in anesthesiology basic science and clinical research are strong indicators of our vast accomplishments. All areas of clinical anesthesia, including perioperative medicine, critical care, and pain management are enriched as a result of our role in this specialty.
