Programs and results
What we aim to solve
We are working to meet the continually increasing demand for, and expanding utilization of, animal therapy teams in San Antonio and the 9 surrounding counties in a manner that supports best practices and maximizes the benefits of the human-animal bond to vulnerable populations. An extension of our work also includes community education and consultation to organizations interested in establishing animal therapy programs in service to their clients. We also know have our CARE program that is in line with National Standards for Crisis Response so that we are able to respond to crisis events that occur.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Animal Assisted Activity and Therapy
Bringing Animal Therapy Teams to hospitals, rehab centers, nursing homes, hospice patients, mental health facilities, correctional and juvenile detention and service centers, bereavement programs, women's shelter, Ronald McDonald homes, and military service programs, as well as other facilities serving vulnerable populations in San Antonio and the 9 surrounding counties.
StoryTails
Reading Program serving schools and libraries where Registered Therapy Animals are used to encourage children to read and to help them improve their reading skills. They read to the animal who provides a non-judgmental audience and a calming environment enhancing child literacy.
Community Education, Presentations, Consultations
Experts on the human-animal bond with various populations provide local, regional, national and international presentations as well as providing education and consultation services to community facilities and organizations seeking understanding and support for potential program development.
De-Stress Events, Conference Engagement and Community Crisis Support
Registered Therapy Teams work with local colleges and universities to support student de-stress events during high anxiety times (exam weeks etc.). Teams attend major area conferences providing attendees opportunties to interact with registered teams while learning about the benefits of the human animal bond. Registered teams partner with the American Red Cross and other national programs to provide aniamal therapy support during community crisis events (mass shootings, fires, floods, etc.).
Humane Education and Advocacy
Our member experts work as requested with local organizations to provide information, research data, education and impact discussions related to the humane treatment of animals and related family and community health issues.
CARE - Crisis Animal Response Program
Our CARE program plays a vital role in responding to school and community crises and disasters. An example of this invaluable support was seen in their response to the Robb Elementary School tragedy, where CARE teams offered crucial assistance to the Uvalde community.
