What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Recreational and Social Programs
One of the toughest challenges faced by individuals with Down syndrome and their families is isolation. According to Dr. George Capone of the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Down Syndrome Clinic, it is crucial to build and maintain a social outlet for teens and adults with Down syndrome that not only fosters independence, but which also includes peers with Down syndrome.
DSACT plans and funds a wide variety of year-round recreational programs for nearly 700 families in Central Texas. These programs enable children and adults with Down syndrome to maintain a productive, meaningful and enhanced quality of life. Most importantly, the programs allow them to fully develop their potential and talents.
These programs have an added benefit of providing children with opportunities to build close friendships with children who are just like them. Our programs also foster an inclusive environment, allowing typically-developing peers to participate alongside those with disabilities. Our programs begin with basic levels and develop with appropriate ages and ability.
DSACT's recreational programs include: martial arts, social dance, fitness bootcamp, art, book club, tumbling, and more!
DSACT's social programs are divided by age to promote developmentally appropriate friendships and connections for parents with children of similar ages. Groups meet about once per month for a fun family activity, at no charge to the family.
New Parent Outreach
Upon diagnosis and referral to DSACT, parents who have a received a prenatal or postnatal diagnosis of Down syndrome for their baby are contacted by one of our trained new parent coordinators who will visit with families , provide a welcome basket full of resources and baby items, and answer questions. These new parent coordinators offer ongoing emotional support and mentoring and introduce new families to DSACT's infant social group.
Medical Outreach
Our medical outreach team meets with local hospital and clinic staff, including doctors, nurse, and social workers, to provide training and education on best practices in delivering a Down syndrome diagnosis and new research in the Down syndrome field. DSACT also develops referral networks with local medical providers to ensure that all families with a Down syndrome diagnosis have the opportunity to connect with DSACT programs and resources.
PEAK Speech Therapy Program
DSACT's PEAK (Parents Empowering Articulation in Kids) Speech Therapy Program is a is low-cost and open to individuals with Down syndrome in the Central Texas area who, with a family member, meet eligibility criteria. We provide group therapy to people with Down syndrome ages 4-adult, working in therapy groups of five participants.
Educational Programs
DSACT offers professional educational opportunities including district-wide, school-wide, and team/individual teacher consultation and continuing education to ensure educators are knowledgeable and competent to use best practices for educating individuals with Down syndrome.
DSACT's Education Manager also provides twice-monthly educational sessions for parents and caregivers on a variety of topics relevant to the learning styles of individuals with disabilities.
For both professionals and family members, DSACT hosts an annual full-day seminar featuring an expert in the special education practice field.
