Citizenship Washington Focus

This weeklong experience provides Colorado youth an opportunity to learn about government firsthand in Washington D.C.
Paricipants stay at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Activities provide opportunities to see the federal government in action and to study American heritage. The emphasis is on learning to address community problems through positive action.

The 4-H Collegiate Scholars are a group of young men and women who are outstanding 4-H members attending Colorado State University. The students serve as state 4-H ambassadors speaking at public events, representing 4-H at key activities and they visit donors and community leaders.

Students receive a $1,500 stipend per year for their efforts. Scholars serve for four years.

4-H Dairy, Horse, Livestock, and Meats Judging Programs:

Judging teaches youth decision-making skills based on research-based information and how to defend their placing through oral reasons. Th e programs also teach teamwork, offer the opportunity to participate in national contests, and provide exposure to future career possibilities.

Knowledge Quiz Bowls

4-H members research based scientific information concerning horse and meat animal livestock production.

Colorado State Fair campion 4-H prjoject winners are rewarded with a trip to the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, GA each year. The conference emphasizes the importance of citizenship projects both locally and nationally.

Eighteen college scholarships totaling $16,400 are awarded each year to 4-H members enrolling in post secondary education opportunities. Receiptants must have complete several years of 4-H work, greater than a 2.0 GPA and have improved there community.

County Agents may apply for any amount up to $5,000 for new programming that is innovative and/or reaches underserved audiences. The funds serve as seed money for special projects.

This event provides an opportunity for 4-H members to engage in program priority-setting on the national level. Delegates identify youth issues and concerns and design 4-H programs to address them. Delegates also learn public policy and visit the Colorado congressional delegation.

The International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) program was developed following World War II to help youth learn about life in another country to prevent future wars. Colorado 4-H has two youth per participate in this program since 1952.

Delegates live with host families one or more countries for 6 months. Upon returning they report their experience to 4-H and school groups throughout Colorado.

•Fundraising: 1) set yearly trustee giving targets and expect full participation. 2) Increase new revenue by 10 percent per year.

•Programs and Service: 1) Provide grants for club, county, area and regional 4-H programming, 2)Give scholarships to cover enrollment fees for youth in need. 3)Partner with the Colorado State Fair to rebuild Camp Tobin dorms.

•Communication: 1) Engage thousands of 4-H alumni living in Colorado to support the Foundation. 2) Implement a comprehensive marketing plan.

•Organization: 1)A Board of Trustees consisting of at least two major corporate officers, two non-Extension employed members from each Extension region and 15 fully engaged members. 2) Build active marketing, governance and finance committees. 3) Develop trustee, committee and staff job descriptions.

Colorado State University Extension had offices and staff in 57 of 63 counties to provided 4-H youth programming. The Colorado 4-H foundation provides over $200,000 annually to support 4-H programming efforts.
