Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
History Exhibits
The Brenham Heritage Museum mounts history exhibits of local and regional interest throughout the year. We own and operate multiple buildings on our campus on the east end of Brenham’s historic downtown. Our current program gives us an opportunity to present 5 or 6 different exhibits per year, but with the reopening of our flagship gallery in 2022, that number should increase. Our focus is always on diversity of stories within the community to make sure all visitors will find history in which they might see their own experiences.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We aim to act as an example for rural museums across the nation, by promoting the arts and heritage of our community in a reliable, professional, and dynamic way. By doing this, we can serve our history, or culture, and our community to the best of our ability.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We strive to meet best industry practices and museum accreditation standards in all we do. We seek partners for every project. We engage with local shareholders at every turn. We seek to make our content honest, relative to our audience, and provocative. We never turn down a potential to create a new relationship, and do our best to help our colleagues at other museums.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are a small organization, but our staff is experienced and well-educated. We have some powerful partners, and a great collection. We are well-funded (enough to stay open indefinitely), and enjoy the use of a modest endowment. We have support from city and county governments. We occupy a great location, in an historic building, in the center of the fastest-growing geographical region in the United States.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We are one of the 1%, those museums that have a complete and digitized catalogue.
We have an international network of partners contributing content and objects to our exhibition work.
We have partnerships with some of the finest art galleries in the US, with the promise of providing our gallery with the best contemporary art.
We have engaged in nationwide projects to create heritage monuments for low cost.
There are many communities in our region without any access to historical preservation services of any kind. They have no repository for material cultural heritage, no gallery, and no organization to rely on for advice or assistance. We would like to endow a travelling team of museum professionals to lend assistance to small communities across our region.
We would also like to expand our centralized collections storage facility by acquiring a secure, offsite building.

- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
