Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Texas Water Foundation is a nonprofit organization striving to lead Texas into a sustainable water future. Established in 1998, its original objective was to raise public awareness among all Texans regarding the vital role water plays in our daily lives. Today, Texas Water Foundation has grown its vision to include investing in the next generation of water leaders, equipping informed decision makers, and inspiring water advocates across Texas.

With the goal of leading Texas into a sustainable water future, and with the leadership of a committed Board of Directors, Texas Water Foundation adopted a new strategic plan.

How we propose to uphold our mission:

1. Create champions of sustainable water management in positions of power: build relationships with leaders and equip them with the ideas and tools to manage water well.
2. Create an educated public that understands the importance of their water: produce clear outreach materials that build popular support for sustainable management.
3. Equip advocates to support sustainable water management: provide aligned organizations with the policy ideas, evidence base, and stakeholder insight to succeed.
4. Build the next generation of leaders in Texas water management: train promising midcareer water professionals and connect them with leadership opportunities.

Texas Water Foundation has prioritized strategic stakeholder engagement to guide a year of program design. Those efforts include: (1) Creation of a 16-person stakeholder committee, which represents utilities, water communication specialists, special interest groups and philanthropists, to assist in the development of a statewide water campaign concept; (2) Statewide polling of about 500 Texans on our
campaign concept (3) Establishment of a 15-person Advisory Board representing the leadership of Texas’ water agencies, associations, philanthropists, and research institutes to provide thought leadership on statewide policy priorities; (4) One-on-one interviews of over 30 appointed/elected officials and business leaders about their knowledge of water issues and needs. Texas Water Foundation intends to continue to engage its stakeholder and advisory committees, as well as conduct further statewide surveys and polling to inform program development.

Texas Water Foundation has developed a new strategic plan to guide it through the coming years. The Carole Baker Water Leadership Institute's 2020 classes are in progress now, and development of a water fluency program for the general public is under way. TWF is also in the process of development a statewide umbrella education campaign called Texas Runs on Water, which will eventually be scaled to rival the success of 1987's Don't Mess with Texas, to provide citizens with the knowledge and tools required to be water stewards in their own right. TWF is also deep in the development stage of creating nonpartisan, nontechnical water issue briefs for decision makers. The Water Policy Institute works to provide nonpartisan educational resources on emerging water policy issues, with the objective of providing nontechnical, digestible issue briefs for decision makers. Our goal is to equip those decision makers with the support they need to become water champions.
