aka FFR   |   Waco, TX   |  http://www.fuzzyfriendsrescue.com

Mission

Fuzzy Friends Rescue believes that animals, as living creatures are entitled to a quality life, respect and compassion. Since humans have domesticated animals, we have a moral and ethical responsibility to care for the animals. Our mission is to provide shelter, food, medical treatment and love to our community's animals that are abandoned, unwanted, or otherwise in need. We want to instill in our community an awareness of the animals whose world we share; encouraging and promoting responsible pet ownership.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

R.E.A.D.

Learning to read is often less about intellectual limitation and more about overcoming fear. "Fear can destroy intelligence," says educator, William Ayers.

Animals are ideal reading companions because they:
Help increase relaxation and lower blood pressure
Listen attentively
Do not judge, laugh, or criticize
Allow children to proceed at their own pace
Are less intimidating than peers

When a R.E.A.D. dog is listening, the environment is transformed; a child's dread is replaced by eager anticipation and learning occurs. Our volunteers are great! They shift the performance pressure off of the child and provide gentle support. In turn, the child gains supervised reading practice which is necessary to build vocabulary, increase understanding of the material, and gain fluency as reader.

Participating children make enormous strides not only in reading and communication skills, but they also are building self-esteem, confidence, and social skills.
