Mission

Caregiver Action Network is the nation's leading family caregiver organization working to improve the quality of life for the more than 90 million Americans who care for loved ones with chronic conditions, disabilities, disease, or the frailties of old age. CAN serves a broad spectrum of family caregivers ranging from the parents of children with special needs, to the families and friends of wounded soldiers; from a young couple dealing with a diagnosis of MS, to adult children caring for parents with Alzheimer's disease. CAN (formerly the National Family Caregivers Association) is a non-profit organization providing education, peer support, and resources to family caregivers across the country free of charge.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Family Caregiver Education

CAN's family caregiver education program creates resourceful and capable caregivers, reduces caregiver stress, and increases respect for caregivers. CAN promotes family caregivers as essential members of the care team, teaching family caregivers to be effective care coordinators and focuses on key coordination activities such as; planning a doctor’s visit, managing an emergency room visit/ICU stay, monitoring care for a hospitalized loved one, care-recipient transfers. Family caregivers learn to develop effective coping skills for dealing with caregiving at all times and particularly at times of stress. CAN offers materials that give tips and tools for staying on top of care plans e.g. toolkits for medication management and other tasks.

The program is delivered as a free membership available to family caregivers who join CAN by sharing demographic information about themselves and their caregiving situation. This information allows CAN to deliver educational resources that meet their specific needs and provides up to date research for CAN to adapt and improve its materials. Family Caregiver members receive a monthly e-letter, links to webinars, toolkits and care coordination platforms all completely free of charge.

In January 2013, a new website launched to deliver improved, updated and interactive content, meeting the expectations of today’s e-connected caregivers.
