Little River Waterkeeper
Clean Water, Healthy Community
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
One World Adventure was established to increase environmental literacy within our communities and to provide outdoor experiences for local underserved youth. We found a great need to educate our local schools about our natural resources and how to expand their students scientific knowledge through fun, hands on learning. Over the past decade, thousands of students have been directly or indirectly involved in our efforts. When the organization established the Little River Waterkeeper program in 2012, it was a natural fit to monitor the very water in which we explore and teach others to love and protect. Now in 2019, we are a powerful force for clean water in our community and state.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Little River Waterkeeper
The Little River Waterkeeper monitors pollution in the unique Little River watershed located in NE Alabama.
Programs are to provide science based data to determine impacts from pollution to the sensitive ecosystem and to educate citizens on any negative impacts that occur.
We are a member affiliate of The Waterkeeper Alliance, an international environmental group who advocate for Clean Water, Clean Air and Healthy Communities.
Erase the Waste Anti-Litter Campaign
Erase the Waste is a county wide anti-litter campaign that educates citizen's about the negative economic impact of litter in our communities and the negative environmental impact litter has in our waterways.
We schedule community cleanups on local waterways from January - April, beginning on the National Day of Service and ending on Earth Day.
Dekalb County Drinking Water Festival
A free field trip held annually at Northeast Alabama Community College for over 1000, 4th grade students from Fort Payne City Schools and DeKalb County Schools. Students learn about the importance of clean water, recycling and wildlife through hands-on learning activities, presentations and educational entertainment.
Swim Guide
Because so many people rely on clean water in Little River for swimming, fishing and boating, LRW conducts weekly water testing for 16 weeks, throughout the summer months as part of the national SwimGuide.org program. Samples are taken from 11 popular swimming sites on Little River and tested for E coli, harmful bacteria that can affect users. Results are then posted for public knowledge on our website, SwimGuide.org and social media pages.
Keep Little River Wild
In August 2019, Little River Waterkeeper and Alabama Rivers Alliance launched a campaign to Keep Little River Wild; they aim to permanently protect this special river with a federal Wild and Scenic designation which ensures that community members and tourists can swim, fish, paddle, and camp the river for years to come.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We seek to foster and protect the pristine resource that is Little River through education, awareness and monitoring.
Through education and awareness of Little River, we aim to improve the quality of life in our community and to foster positive change through memomorable experiences on and around Little River.
We seek to build strong relationships within our community by bringing new ideas about sustainable practices.
Through water monitoring on Little River, our goal is to create a well documented "health of the watershed" in order to create a sustainable water management plan to maintain pristine water quality over the generations.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
By building relationships within the community in which we serve, providing accurate water quality data and to education.
.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have developed a strong operating criteria having a state certified lab to test water quality, we can have accurate data to map the watershed and educate the public on threats to the watershed.
Little River Waterkeeper has created engaging community programs such as Erase the Waste and SwimGuide to bring awareness to issues that effect the health and wellbeing on the community and local waterways.
By educating the next generation, we are able to flatten the curve in negative behaviors toward the environment. Our Dekalb County Drinking Water Festival encourages students to make good choices in waste management, energy consumption and teaches the connection between clean water and healthy communities.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
One World is now in its 11th year. To date we have served over thousands of local and visiting participants. ALL participants report favorable experiences. Our financials show continued sustainable growth over the eight year period with normal ups and downs.
The organization has demonstrated positive expansion of our board of directors, program offerings, volunteer base, members and community support. We have attained desirable office space for our base of operations, equipment and assets.
In January 2020, we officially changed the organizations name from One World Adventure to Little River Waterkeeper, in order to focus more on Water Advocacy and the protection of Little River.
