What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

One Life Counseling aims to address the critical lack of accessible and culturally sensitive mental health services, particularly for low-income and Spanish-speaking individuals in the San Mateo County area. The organization seeks to bridge the gap in mental health care by providing affordable therapy, removing language barriers, and offering holistic support to improve the overall well-being of marginalized communities.

Low-Fee Mental Health Counseling Program

Low-Fee Mental Health Counseling Program: One Life provides free or low-fee therapy to low-income and uninsured and underinsured children, families, and individuals in the community who would otherwise be unable to afford professional counseling. 100% of the clients served in this program are economically disadvantaged, and nearly all have acute mental health needs that are not otherwise being addressed due to inability to pay for services, inaccessible scheduling, and/or language or cultural barriers. One Life also connects each client with other community supports based on their unique needs, such as food pantries, emergency financial assistance, English classes, medical care, housing, and legal assistance.

The program serves students in dire need of mental health support, addressing various challenges such as learning disabilities, emotional disturbances like depression and bullying, and unstable housing. One Life offers tiered support, collaborating with teachers to provide preventive and interventional services aligned with the school curriculum. Therapists engage students in classroom activities to enhance their mental health and social-emotional skills. Additional one-on-one or group therapy is available for those requiring extra assistance. Programming is flexible, adapting to school requests and collaborating with Student Study Teams and support services. Services are year-round, including summers and breaks, either on-site or at One Lifes offices. Family members also receive counseling and practical assistance such as food, clothing, and referrals to community resources tailored to their needs, including housing and medical care.

One Life Counseling prioritizes the well-being of isolated seniors with our Music for the Mind program, tailored for those in homes or assisted living, including those with memory loss and Alzheimer's. Collaborating with San Mateo County facilities and partners, we impact around 350 seniors yearly. We distribute customized MP3 players and host activities like musical bingo, enriching lobbies with curated playlists, benefiting countless individuals.
This nationally recognized program aims to diminish anxiety, depression, and isolation, reducing reliance on antipsychotic medication. A dedicated coordinator fosters connections, creating personalized playlists that evoke cherished memories, fostering happiness and social engagement. Studies affirm its efficacy in reducing medication dependence and agitation, enhancing social skills, and improving emotional management.
