Forging community and creativity
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
MoRA supports improved transit, biking and walkability, and elevating neighborhoods and local businesses. MoRA celebrates and promotes community and creativity along all of Monroe Road.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Embrace sculpture
EMBRACE is an iconic, 16' tall mosaic, mirrored polished steel and brushed metal sculpture located in Charlotte NC at Conference Drive and Monroe Road.
It was created as the focal point of a new community gathering spot and an iconic area identifier for the Monroe Road Area. By engaging the community from concept development through installation, it has created collective ownership and a grounding sense of pride in this rapidly evolving area of Charlotte.
Collaborative, place-making artist Leslie Scott designed Embrace, and renowned artist Lee Baumgarten completed its installation. It was dedicated by the community in 2017.
Thursdays Live summer music series
On the third Thursday from April through October, a live band performs at the Embrace sculpture in front of crowds from 200 to 400. The bands play a diverse array of styles for a variety of audiences.
Food and beverage is available for purchase from local Edge City Brewery, Hawthorne's Pizza, and more
Communication and connection
Throughout all of MoRA's programming, we seek to engage the community. We shine a light on the Monroe Road Area, connecting our diverse neighborhoods, connecting businesses with people, and connecting everyone with events and the things that are happening in the area.

Business engagement
MoRA connects businesses with each other all along the Monroe Road corridor. We're not a merchant's association or a chamber of commerce, but rather we offer MoRA businesses the chance to get to know each other, support each other, share resources and information. MoRA has a closed business Facebook page, a quarterly email just for businesses, and periodic socials and mixers.
Actor's Theatre of Charlotte Summer Series
MoRA made a financial investment to be the presenting sponsor for the Actor's Theatre of Charlotte's summer series. This investment was part of MoRA's commitment to bring art, artists, and arts organizations to the MoRA area.
Advocacy
MoRA is a grass roots organization that is shaping the business and community life of the Monroe Road Area. We reach out to our elected officials. We advocate for things residents say they want, like bike paths, transit, good schools, and responsible development.
Bring Arts to MoRA Campaign
Public Art in MoRA began with the creation of the iconic Embrace sculpture, built by the community and located on Monroe Road at Conference Drive. Embrace then became the home of the free live music series, Thursdays Live. More murals are popping up along Monroe Road, and people are enthusiastically sharing their creativity.
This summer, the Actor's Theatre of Charlotte is bringing live musical theatre with their outdoor performances at The Barn at MoRA, a Levine property, in McAlpine Business Park.
We want to continue showing that this area supports the arts with our Bring Arts to MoRA fundraising campaign. Funds raised will go towards bringing vibrant, diverse and community-driven art, artists, and art organizations to MoRA.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The purpose of the organization is to form a coalition of neighborhood leaders, associations, businesses and organizations to forge a more vital and vibrant community.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategic initiatives:
• Promote and support the social, educational, cultural, artistic, and economic life of this welcoming area of Charlotte while encouraging and preserving its diversity.
• Provide a forum for building relationships among area residents, businesses and community institutions to share information, viewpoints, and ideas.
• Identify common needs and ambitions for discussion, advocacy, and potential action.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
* MoRA has been cultivating relationships with stakeholders since its beginning, such as with the neighborhoods all along Monroe Road, sharing information, seeking collaboration
* Strong communications and social media platforms support local businesses and nonprofits
* An all-volunteer board of directors and advisors consisting of area residents meet monthly to affirm/direct the organization's goals
* The organization has a stable financial foundation
* MoRA has developed positive relationships with elected officials and government administrators in order to advocate effectively for what residents say they want
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Inclusive and collaborative, our organization includes stakeholders from area neighborhoods, businesses and nonprofits.
Our efforts include:
•Advocating for bike paths, walkability, transit, and public safety. Assuring that residents' voices are heard when major issues, such as light rail, are being decided.
•Annual town hall meetings and a government agencies open house have been held since 2015.
•Public art projects have been created in collaboration with the community:
1) The iconic "Embrace" public art sculpture was the first of MoRA's transformational projects. The 16' mosaic and mirrored polished steel sculpture was unveiled in 2017 and continues to serve as a community gathering place and a landmark for the area.
2) "Tapestry" collaborative community mural which weaves together iconic fabric patterns and images representing the different countries and ethnicities of residents in the area, and celebrates the culture of the people who live here. It was created and dedicated in 2019.
3) "Patchworks" is a series of street murals at three intersections along Monroe Road installed in 2021. These pieces reflect the experiences and cultural backgrounds of the people who live and work here.
What's ahead: continuing to create community relationships, elevating our neighborhoods, supporting our businesses, creating art and opportunities for community connection. Outreach to the community in the form of surveying, polls and questionnaires is upcoming.
