What we aim to solve
There are over 90,000 children and adults living with developmental disabilities in New York City, many of whom are classified as low-income households with little access to social outlets and creative opportunities. These individuals, living with Autism, Down syndrome, and other developmental delays, are the people that DreamStreet serves. DreamStreet primarily functions as a theatre company, so new participants are considered new cast members. Enrollment at DreamStreet is free to all cast members. It is a free community service and opportunity to adults with developmental disabilities from Brooklyn and throughout the five boroughs. Right now, the vast majority of our cast members come from Brooklyn. However, as word gets out about our program, there is great opportunity to expand.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
THE CAST & PRODUCTION
DreamStreet empowers and inspires adults with developmental disabilities through immersive performing arts experiences. Participants in the program are referred to as cast members. Cast members participate and help produce three major productions a year, which they select, adapt, rehearse and perform. All performances include original work created by cast members, often reflecting on contemporary issues and their own personal experiences. For example, for the summer 2018 performance, cast members performed “Mary Poppins: Step in Time,” an adaptation of the classic story, which drew out the story of the Suffragette Movement and connected it to contemporary women’s empowerment movements.
To prepare for public performances, cast members commit to two, two-hour rehearsals a week over the course of the year. Tuesday rehearsals are held at the Berkeley Carroll School's dance studio in Brooklyn, NY. Thursday rehearsals are held at the South Oxford Space in Brooklyn, NY.
ANNUAL PROJECT OUTCOMES INCLUDE:
1. Engaging intensely with 30+ adults with developmental disabilities with a love for the performing arts as cast members;
2. Enabling the DreamStreet Cast to produce three separate, unique shows each year;
3. Enabling the DreamStreet Cast to perform each show 13 times, totaling 4-6 large-scale public performances (and 6 more smaller performances) each year in front of 3,100+ friends, family, supporters, industry members, and community members;
4. Securing high quality performance venues to enrich the experience of our cast members;
5. Building the confidence, performing and production skills, and love of the performing arts for cast members; and
7. Building a sense of community and strengthening the personal relationship skills for cast members.
THE PLATFORM PROJECT
In 2018, DreamStreet launched a new program, The Platform Project, which is a professional development track for cast members who have demonstrated leadership abilities and standout performance skills. Cast members wanted more opportunities to learn to produce their own work through acting, writing, directing, dancing and beyond. The Platform Project provides training in work opportunities in the performing arts, as well as a safe space for cast members to explore themes and story lines that could have broad, commercial appeal. Participants complete a group project from beginning to end and benefit from additional experiential learning opportunities in an engaging, social environment.
ANNUAL PROJECT OUTCOMES INCLUDE:
1. Provide 10+ adults with developmental disabilities each year with an immersive performing arts professional training program;
2. One show entirely produced by a cast of adults living with developmental disabilities;
3. Marked improvement in 75% of program participants in soft and hard skills within the performing arts;
4. Manage a network of at least 5 artists, casting directors, local theaters/performance venues, and online venues offering acting and/or production opportunities for Platform Project cast members (this network will grow over time); and
5. 2-3 acting or job opportunities for cast members secured by end of each year.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal: through large-scale theatrical productions, performing arts training, and community outreach performances, DreamStreet helps those with developmental abilities and special needs strengthen their artistic and interpersonal skills, build confidence, and become role models in their communities.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
DreamStreet provides adults living with developmental disabilities opportunity, fulfillment, education and inspiration through its performing
arts programming. DreamStreet also offers their families peace of mind, hope, and joy in seeing their loved ones succeed at something they
love.
Specifically, these are the community benefits we expect from our programming every year:
Benefit #1, Learn artistic skills: Cast members will learn new production skills including creative writing, artistic direction and production, set
design, and performance.
Benefit #2, Gain fulfillment: Cast members will report satisfaction and joy in expressing themselves creatively and artistically, and will gain
experience in pursuing a full circle creative process.
Benefit #3, Become amateur or professional artists: Cast members that participate in the Platform Project will gain skills and knowledge for
artistic career development, and pursue opportunities in/are recruited by the performing arts sector.
Benefit #4, Increased appreciation of the unique abilities of people with development disabilities: Audience members (about 3,100) will gain
significant appreciation for the talents and contributions of cast members with development disabilities, helping to breakdown stigma and
increase opportunities for cast members (and others).
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
