Historic Atkins Porter Neighborhood Association
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
HAPNA has avoided charging membership dues in order to attract neighbors to be involved in the association activities. With over 700 homes and businesses within the boundaries, there is significant variation in family incomes and mostly low income and retired individuals in the area. Basically, we run on a shoe-string and raise funds through fundraisers when needed. We are a very young organization and still proving our worth within Paris, TN.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Atkins Porter Community Park
HAPNA is in process of building a park for use by the community. The association purchased a derelict property and has worked with Preserve Paris and the regional USDA office for grant assistance with the park development. The park is expected to be ready for use in 2019. With a large pavilion and beautiful landscaping, the park is expected to be a gathering place within the neighborhood.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
-Community involvement!
-Improving the quality of life in our neighborhood.
-Safety in our neighborhood.
-Preservation of property and common areas (city sidewalks, parks, street lights, etc.) as this is an old neighborhood bordering the downtown public square in Paris, TN.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The key strategy focuses on community involvement.
-HAPNA is building a community park within the neighborhood for all to use. Prior to the park, this was a derelict property. HAPNA partnered with Preserve Paris and the USDA (rural communities) to provide grant funds to assist with the cost (50%). The park will be completed in 2019.
-HAPNA holds monthly association meetings where all members of the community are invited. In these meetings there are speakers on topics such as local government, police, landlord/tenant rules, general safety.
-HAPNA built and installed a Free Little Library near the city dog park, which is within our neighborhood. It has received a tremendous amount of use by adults and children.
-HAPNA holds an annual neighborhood yard sale where about 20 families participate.
-HAPNA participates in the annual Ice Cream Social in conjunction with the Downtown Paris Association.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
HAPNA has a core group who is very dedicated to seeing the organization succeed and bring a better sense of community to our neighborhood.
The board and officers are all skilled business people with deep ties in the Paris TN community.
We maintain a great relationship with the Preserve Paris efforts and the local USDA office focused on rural communities. Through this connection, we participate in force when there are sponsored activities in near-by communities.
We hold a fundraiser when we need to!
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
HAPNA is a young organization. We conduct monthly meetings and cover topics the community has requested. We have established a website, a Nextdoor community with about 200 members, and a Facebook following.
Becoming a 501(c)3 has been very valuable in our work with raising funds for the community park project and being awarded a USDA rural communities grant.
What's next? HAPNA wants to finish the community park build in late 2018 or early 2019 (stated deadline is 12/31/19). We also want to improve attendance at our monthly meeting so as to encourage more neighbors to be actively involved.
