The mission of Sick Cells is to improve the care of and quality of life for people living with sickle cell disease (SCD), including ending the stigma of SCD, by shaping public policy, educating the SCD community to be engaged advocates, and creating greater awareness in the general public overall. Educate decision-makers about the grave challenges, unique needs, and sharp disparities this community faces, and 3. Unite and empower the SCD community to effectively advocate on important topics and policies.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Faces of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Program

Our Faces of SCD initiative was the initial keystone program that inspired the formation of Sick Cells. This program captures the stories of patients and caregivers. Sick Cells seeks to tell the untold stories within the community as well as expand awareness of the diversity of the SCD patient population to better represent the community as a whole.

Population(s) Served

The Sick Cells' Ambassador Program is a volunteer network of advocates dedicated to changing the landscape of sickle cell disease. There’s strength in numbers, so we’re empowering advocates to unite and spread awareness to our larger community.

Sick Cells created this program to put our own community at the forefront of conversations around SCD. Advocates and patients are often left out of critical conversations and opportunities and a shift was needed. By activating sickle cell advocates and educating each other on policy issues, we look to boost the impact our collective voice can have in the real world.
