What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Most students with multiple disabilities age out of public school at 18. And in Tulsa County, Oklahoma there is nowhere for adults with profound multiple disabilities to find community and stimulation. Other day programs require clients to be mobile and/or out of diapers, which excludes people with profound needs. For these overlooked individuals, the only options are to sit alone at home or to go into a nursing home with the elderly. Their quality of life and the skills they had learned quickly begin to degenerate.

Joys To The World Summer Camp

The Joy Academy offers a safe, quality, and healthy environment for students with profound
intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD). Our focus is to serve young adults with PIMD global adaptive services such as individualized communication, self-awareness through mindful movement, participation in self-interests and socialization, individualized skill-based activities, team building with family, and mutual community awareness. The program model at The Joy Academy (TJA) is structured to help individuals with PIMD live an abundant and purposeful life which breeds health, acceptable social behavior, positive mental health and well-being which deters isolation, depression and loneliness. As of November 2022 we have a facility in southwest Tulsa and Owasso, Oklahoma. Providing a safe environment for their children allows parents and guardians to work and take respite.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Joys To The World wants to provide a place for adults with severe/profound multiple disabilities to have a safe environment to be stimulated and encouraged to demonstrate their individuality.

We have a small board which needs to be expanded with talented and/or experienced individuals who can help with marketing, fundraising, grant writing and a passion to fill the need in our community.
Research has shown us that many communities and states in America and across the world lack facilities for adults witih profound multiple disabilites, so eventually Joys To The World, Inc would like to grow into an organization which meets needs in other USA communities and those in international sister cities. We are hoping to open the first of many, The Joy Learning Academy in August 2020 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
We need money to proceed and we also want to write grants for ongoing funding.
Joys To The World, Inc also needs transportation to move wheelchair clients to and from The Academy and around the Tulsa area because many parents do not have the ability to move their adult with disabilities around in the community.

We have some media and printed material ready to present in fund raising activities and to ask for money. We believe we could get started and successfully complete the first year with $100,000 - $283,000 which includes staffing, insurances, special adaptive equipment and general financial needs. Many people in the community are aware of the need and some parents who are desperate for this type of service. Jenny Joy Ramnath, a co-founder has a Masters in Special Education and many years of experience working with severely multiply handicapped people. The other co-founder, Kathy Cott, has 40 years of experience with Special Education. Both of these educators have a desire and call to see Joys To The World, Inc come to fruition.

We have a strategic plan, a budget (which needs help), a small board, government documentation as a 501(c)3 and identification of the need in the community. Joys To The World has offered a 4 week camp for 3 summers to test the planned structure of the idea. It has been very effective and enjoyed by clients and praised by parents.
