Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Through our interactive workshops in leadership, education, exploration and positive identity development, Statement Junky seeks to educate girls on the social and emotional issues unique to girls of color while providing each girl with resources, youth building fundamentals and opportunities for study abroad and global engagement. Statement Junky aims to empower and equip girls and young women to navigate the economic and social barriers within her community and abroad. Specifically, the organization strives to:

- Provide each participant with an essential key to access the world, her passport.
- Empower participants with leadership, communication, critical thinking, and self esteem building skills, all of which will enable them to lead productive and independent lives.
- Expose all girls in the program to experts and careers in a range of fields.
- Ensure that over 85% of girls and young women in the program will engage in exploratory opportunities which leads to girls and young women exploring beyond the borders of her community.
- Provide opportunities for girls and young women to have a positive impact on their peers by enabling them to host peer-lead workshops.
- Raise awareness about the importance of a passport for a girl of color during her formative years.

Statement Junky’s unique programming tackles issues unique to girls of color. Our curriculum combines empowerment, exploration and positive identity development while developing participants communication, leadership skills and college and career readiness. We utilize an interest-driven learning model that taps into what girls and young women are curious about and like to do naturally to engage them in learning about current events that affect girls and equips them with the skills and tools they need to make an impact. All programs share the following key ingredients:

- Youth development support via our unique programming.
- Focused college and career exploration.
- 21st century skill building including team building, problem-solving, critical thinking and cross cultural communications.
- Hands on leadership opportunities through youth-led peer education.
- Exposure to and dialogue with professional and business experts and travel enthusiast.

Since its inception in 2017, Statement Junky has been a premier provider of passport resources and services to girls of color and their families. Statement Junky’s staff and workshop facilitators are highly skilled educators with training and experience in youth development and affairs that affect girls of color. An important element of Statement Junkys’ approach is the role of the facilitators, who provide personal support to girls who do not receive it at home or in the classroom. Statement Junky staff has built a reputation as leaders in utilizing a youth development approach to empower, inspire and educate girls and young women about critical issues unique to them.

Statement Junky is committed to outcomes measurements as it is utilized to demonstrate the effectiveness of our program to our donors and constituents (schools, youth-lead organizations and other partners) and to inform decisions regarding program design and implementation. Statement Junkys’ performance measurement system primarily tracks participants’ completion of our workshop(s); demonstrated increased interest of domestic and international exploration; demonstrated increased leadership and self esteem skills that enable them to lead productive and independent lives; and demonstrate the values and attitudes of a change agent.

Statement Junky uses both formal and informal methods to measure participants’ growth. Formally, we utilize pre and post surveys to determine the success of our interventions on participants’ knowledge and interaction on specific subject matters.
During our most recent year of programming, Statement Junky has impacted more than three dozen girls of color and their families. 76% of our girls have a US passport and of the participants in our programming 35% of girls have traveled internationally while over 98% of participants have traveled domestically to areas outside of their communities. Statement Junky routinely seeks to improve upon these outcomes through refining our partnerships with schools, youth lead organizations and community partners. Our network is ever growing as we seek to reach more girls and young women of color in high school and help them become bold and confident leaders and change agents.
