What we aim to solve
Adoption Process: As a Network Partner and Supporter of Best Friends Animal Society, one of our main focuses is more adoptions. Unfortunately, many myths lead shelters to deny qualified applicants for reasons that should never even be considered a fault. • Fenceless owners should not be penalized. Many very loving and responsible pet owners are without a fenced in yard. • Vaccines have lapsed. All pet owners will confess falling behind at one time or another. It shouldn’t be a deal breaker. • Denying a “Pet as a Gift” This is a surprising statistic. Pets that are gifted are LESS LIKELY to be returned to the shelter, purely for the emotional factor attached. • and other rules that should never deem someone unqualified to adopt a pet. This simply needs to be a conversation about responsible ownership and the risks involved when there is an opportunity for something to happen if unmonitored. People love their pets. Educate them, don’t deny them this opportunity for love

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
1. No-Kill Initiative. We are 100% NO KILL.
We support humane euthanasia for illnesses, suffering or extreme danger to people without the possibility of rehabilitation. At Best Friends Sanctuary, no animal is put down without the presence of a minimum of two humans to love and comfort them throughout the passing. Brilliant. Humane. Lifechanging. I love that. We will do that forevermore at Grateful Rescue.
2. Providing a comfortable setting for any animal that is homeless. Indoor/outdoor runs, group housing and solo housing for the dog selective breeds. Regardless of housing, all have indoor and outdoor runs. Solos coexist beside one another, but out of reach of each other, providing no touch companionship with each other. They are actually known to play with each other while confined in their safe runs.
3. Improving the number of adoptions. By providing a more comfortable environment, our vision is to allow potential adopters see animals in a natural and relaxed state, unlike those caged up in shelters. The group homes also increase adoption numbers as most commonly, adopters prefer a dog that will get along with others.
4. Cats also have group and single housing. Indoor outdoor "Catios" provide relaxing access to fresh air and indoor spaces, while being contained from harm. Feral fields are also in the works for those who need to roam and live off the land.
5. Community programs: Animal Assisted Literacy Programs, Equine Therapy Programs, Pets for Vets, Prison Training Programs
6. Hospice, Nursing Home, and Veteran Hospital Visitation Programs
7. Temporary housing for Military Service, Hospitalizations, or other temporary life events to keep animals safe while away, preventing surrenders due to no place to give them care until returning.
8. Networking with other Rescues and Animal Shelters: Rescues need to welcome each other to reach out in times of need. We all share in the cause. Politics and power struggles have got to go. We want everyone to succeed.
While the phases of expansions and possibilities are endless, that’s where the vision rests for now.

What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Immediate phases of Funding Needed:
• Phase 1: Property Acquisition: $400,000
• Phase 2: The Vital Buildings for the Sanctuary to open. The welcome center, medical quarantine center, and animal structures. TBD - Through CrowdFunding, Grant writing, Fundraising, and Donations
Excerpt from Planned CrowdFunding Site:
"As fate would have it, just a few days before we were to leave for a workshop at Best Friends Sanctuary in Utah on How to Open and Run an Animal Sanctuary, I learned that the property owner of 38 acres, which is attached to our property, is willing to sell it to me for $10,000 an acre, for a total of $380,000. This price is prime property pricing, which we agree is worth it. We are located less that 5 miles off I-69. And I live her. That is the biggest prime location ever.
What isn’t the greatest timing is the fact that I am just finishing a big construction project FOR THE DOGS, which took a large amount of budgeting. It’s a hit we weren’t expected to have at this moment, but we have to do it. We’re going to finance what we can’t raise. We have to do it.
We are already established in the community. All of the property I own is paid for. I’ve been here for almost 25 years, having raised my children here and now raising the fur kids here, and a grandson! We have an opportunity to save thousands of lives, and I have to go for it.
But the more we can raise, the less we’ll have to go in debt and we can continue directing our available money straight into Sanctuary development.
Donors of every amount will be acknowledged in some appropriate means in the Sanctuary. Every donor is appreciated and will be publicly thanked for their support."
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are already established in the community. All of the property I own is paid for. I’ve been here for almost 25 years, having raised my children here and now raising the fur kids here, and a grandson! We have an opportunity to save thousands of lives, and I have to go for it.
But the more we can raise, the less we’ll have to go in debt and we can continue directing our available money straight into Sanctuary development.
I cannot turn down this opportunity. Through Fundraising, I will lessen the amount of financing I will have to request, but this is happening. The public support will speed it along.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Grateful Rescue Current Status
Dog Rescue: Grateful Rescue sits on my residential property of 22 acres in Muncie, IN. I began the rescue in November of 2016. We practice group housing for the dogs. They roam together in small packs solely for the purpose of companionship, while waiting for their forever homes. We currently have two packs of 9. Some are for adoption, some are forever pets, and some are sanctuary dogs: living their lives out comfortably here because they are not likely to be placed in a home for one reason or another.
Equine Center: Half of our property is a fenced-in pasture where we have many types and sizes of horses from miniatures to draft horses, as well as a couple of spotted Pinto donkeys. We are currently in the planning stages of an Equine Therapy Program for the disabled at the Grateful Rescue Stable as well as other Animal Assisted Therapy Programs.
All property is paid for. We've lived here for 25 years. We are established in the community.

- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
