Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our organization addresses the critical need for comprehensive development opportunities for student-athletes from underserved and underfunded communities. We recognize the gap in access to quality sports training, academic support, and character development programs for these young individuals. We aim to bridge this gap by providing a holistic development program that enhances their athletic abilities and fosters academic excellence, mental resilience, and strong character values. Through this, we strive to prepare our student-athletes for success in higher education and athletic pursuits, ultimately empowering them to become positive contributors to their communities.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
To address the needs of our student-athletes and achieve our objectives, we employ the following strategies:
1. Comprehensive Development Curriculum: We've designed a holistic program that integrates mental skills development, physical fitness, basketball proficiency, and character building. This ensures a balanced approach to the growth of our student-athletes, addressing all facets of their development.
2. Targeted Recruitment: Focusing on underserved and underfunded communities, we actively recruit young individuals who are most in need of the opportunities our program provides. We engage with local schools, community centers, and other organizations to identify potential student-athletes.
3. Experienced Coaching Staff: We invest in qualified and experienced coaches and trainers who are not only adept in their sports but also committed to the personal development of each student-athlete. These professionals provide personalized training plans and mentorship.
4. Academic Support Services: Recognizing the importance of academic success, our program includes tutoring, academic advisement, and support services to help student-athletes maintain and improve their grades, ensuring they qualify for collegiate opportunities.
5. Competitive and Recreational Opportunities: We facilitate access to competitive leagues, games, and tournaments, as well as recreational play, to enhance basketball skills and foster a love for the sport, teamwork, and healthy competition.
6. Character and Leadership Development: Through workshops, community service projects, and team-building activities, we focus on instilling values such as integrity, discipline, leadership, and empathy. These activities are designed to build character and prepare student-athletes for leadership roles on and off the court.
7. Community Engagement and Support: We encourage and organize community service initiatives that allow our student-athletes to give back, fostering a sense of social responsibility and community connection.
8. Exposure to Opportunities: We actively seek opportunities for our student-athletes to showcase their talents to college recruiters, providing guidance on the college recruitment process and supporting them in finding suitable opportunities for higher education.
9. Monitoring and Evaluation: To ensure the effectiveness of our program, we implement rigorous monitoring and evaluation processes. This allows us to track the progress of our student-athletes in various domains and make data-driven adjustments to our strategy and curriculum as needed.
Through these strategies, we aim to create a supportive and enriching environment that empowers our student-athletes to achieve their full potential, both academically and athletically, while also developing into well-rounded individuals who can contribute positively to society.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our organization's capabilities for implementing the Student-Athlete Development Program include:

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.

- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
