Small-scale place-based living skills in southern Maine

What we aim to solve
Lack of connection to nature is the fundamental cause of many, if not all, social and global problems. When human societies are intimately and intricately related to the world around them, they thrive. Historically, societies that have been dependent on small-scale, seasonal ways of living - deeply entwined with the natural world - have been more equitable, mentally and physically healthy, economically equitable, and ecologically regenerative and sustainable. The problem with the world is that most of society is completely disconnected from the natural world and its cycles and resources that support our life. We aim to address this problem, in our corner of the world, by facilitating and deepening the connections between people, each other, and the natural world.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to influence as many people as we can to participate in rewilding, and to facilitate deeper connections between people, each other, and the natural world. We want to contribute to the creation of a world full of thoughtful, aware, resourceful people who are actively engaged with ecological and social regeneration. We aim to inspire children and adults, and teach our students how to honor the gifts of the natural world, and we want to encourage people to participate in humble stewardship of this beautiful world. Our goal is to educate about small-scale, place-based living skills, natural awareness, management of invasive plant species, proliferation of biodiversity in wild places, botany and biology, and organic arts and crafts; in short, our goal is to promote rewilding.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategies for educating people about rewilding mostly consist of, but are not limited to, classes and workshops for the general public. We work with schools, homeschool groups, libraries, churches, and other organizations to facilitate learning experiences that are focused on plants, animals, wilderness survival skills, organic/DIY outdoor living and arts/crafts. We also engage in other strategies for social outreach, such as posting on social media and making educational videos. Our overarching strategy is to be as open, honest, authentic and accessible as possible; we don't want to close the door to any curious minds for any reason. We offer a free class every month, in addition to other free offerings; we have a sliding-scale payment option for every one of our tuition-supported programs. Our strategy is, in general, to engage in rewilding openly and publicly, and invite others to join as often as possible.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our general capability is present, and moderately high, despite our own engendered humility, potential inferiority complexes, frequent prevalence of impostor syndrome, and perceived lack of experience. Our instructors are patient, honest, earnest, knowledgable and communicative. Our classes are effective and well-received.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since 2017, we have effectively connected with over 5,000 children and adults in and around Southern Maine, and have positively influenced them to regard nature with a deeper sense of awareness and reverence. We have taught people how to identify plants for food and medicine, and how to listen to the birds to understand the movements of the forest more deeply, and we have taught people how to make beautiful baskets and other works of art. We are proud to continue working to achieve the mission and goals set by our organization.
