What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Amgen Biotech Experience

The Citizen Science Lab, as the Pittsburgh site of the Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE), is the host training site for regional middle and high school science teachers. The ABE program provides teachers with hands-on biotechnology curriculum and intensive professional development so that teachers can, in turn, prepare students for STEM careers and bolster the country’s economy and STEM-dependent industries. After completion of the training program, teachers are provided with not only a "classroom kit*" comprised of lab equipment and supplies but also receive extensive technical support from The Citizen Science Lab.

TCSL’s “Field Trip in a Box” allows students and their families a way to engage in an evidence-based, interactive science experimentation from the safety of their homes. All of the materials and supplies needed for a hands-on, fun-filled experiment is provided to each student and guided Zoom instruction is provided by a TCSL Enrichment Technician.

"Field Trip in a Box" kits are available for schools, organizations, community groups, or families looking to add some STEM into their lives! Contingent upon funding, we often offer these kits, free of charge, to underserved communities.

"Field Trip in a Box" curriculum includes the following subjects:

Molecular Biology & Genetics
Zoology
Microbiology
Human Health & Physiology
Botany
Aquaponics
Environmental Sustainability
Chemistry
Biochemistry
Physics
Space

Girls in African American communities are also grossly underrepresented in STEM careers and, in particular, robotic engineering. In addition, for African American students in Pittsburgh, there is often a lack exposure to quality robotics and engineering programs. The Citizen Science Lab's Seaperch program directly addresses these two obstacles to creating a more diverse STEM workforce. TCSL's SeaPerch gives African American middle school girls the chance to design, build, and modify their own Seaperch ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle). TCSL's SeaPerch continues to make a significant impact on the students involved. Many of the girls that participate receive a huge boost in self esteem and are now considering careers in robotics and engineering. Not only are the girls able to learn how to solder circuit boards, waterproof and build motors, test for buoyancy and much more, they also make their own modifications, learn what it means to work collaboratively, develop scientific notebooks and enhance their presentation skills. Many girls return to our SeaPerch program for multiple program years.
