RELIGIOUS COALITION TO ASSIST THE HOMELESS
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Homelessness is a continuing problem in the city of Austin. Austin's churches are empowered by city ordinance to pool the drainage fee portion of their monthly utility bills to a fund overseen by the Coalition, which gives the money as grants to organizations providing beds to those experiencing homelessness.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Religious Coalition to Assist the Homeless
The Religious Coalition to Assist the Homeless allocates grant funding to Austin agencies whose programs work to expand capacity in their shelters and housing programs.

Goals & Strategy
Learn about the organization's key goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress.
Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
1. The RCAH recruits churches to divert their drainage fees to the grant fund.
2. The RCAH solicits and evaluates applications for grants submitted by organizations that provide beds for those experiencing homelessness.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The RCAH board of directors created two committees to exercise the organization's strategies. The membership committee recruits additional churches to join the organization, and the agency oversight committee oversees preparation of grant applications and makes recommendations as to the size of grants and the organizations that receive them.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The RCAH is led by an experienced executive director who has worked for several decades within the community of organizations and individuals working to find solutions for those experiencing homelessness. The board of directors consists of approximately 12 trustees, each from a participating church, and each with an interest in, and/or experience with, the area of homelessness.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The RCAH has awarded over $800,000 a year in grants to organizations reducing homelessness. The number has increased most years. It has stabilized during the current grant year (October 2021 to September 2022).
We have experienced moderate turnover on our board, and we will be naming three new members at our next quarterly meeting, which will bring our total back to 12.
Organizations that receive RCAH grants are providing nearly 2,200 beds for persons experiencing homelessness this year (2022).
