What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Texas has one of the highest populations of individuals with disabilities at 12.9%, most of whom live in Houston and the surrounding gulf coast region. Our local community, Deer Park, is made up of 7.9% of individuals with disabilities, while the surrounding communities of Pasadena and La Porte have 8.1% and 11.6%, respectively. According to the Texas Workforce Investment Council in 2017, 81.3% of all individuals with disabilities were not participants in the workforce. In order to be considered part of the workforce, an individual must be currently employed, unemployed, or seeking work. These statistics highlight what our young adults face every day, the lack of training and employment opportunities.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Skills Transitioning and Employment Pathways to Success strives to create more vocational training and employment opportunities for adults with disabilities in our community. We believe all individuals deserve the opportunity to discover and grow their unique talents with the world.

We currently have two enterprises: balloon designs by S.T.E.P.S. and shirt, socks, and mask designs by S.T.E.P.S. Both enterprises allow our young adults to experience sales from start to finish. They learn in a hands-on setting that gives them the freedom to explore their talents with the guidance of staff members if needed. Following a training period, which varies for each young adult based on their needs, they have the opportunity to become employed with one of our enterprises where they will earn $7.25 per hour for their work.
As we grow, we plan to expand our enterprise opportunities for our young adults in order to increase our impact. We are currently fundraising to begin an engraving and laser cutting enterprise.

S.T.E.P.S. was founded by a former special education teacher with decades of experience, which has given her unique insight in the ideal way to train our young adults. We strive to create an ideal environment for each young adult to learn and grow.
