What we aim to solve
Texas has one of the highest populations of individuals with disabilities at 12.9%, most of whom live in Houston and the surrounding gulf coast region. Our local community, Deer Park, is made up of 7.9% of individuals with disabilities, while the surrounding communities of Pasadena and La Porte have 8.1% and 11.6%, respectively. According to the Texas Workforce Investment Council in 2017, 81.3% of all individuals with disabilities were not participants in the workforce. In order to be considered part of the workforce, an individual must be currently employed, unemployed, or seeking work. These statistics highlight what our young adults face every day, the lack of training and employment opportunities.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Sublimation and Vinyl Enterprise
Young adults have the opportunity to create custom shirts, tumblers, mugs, ornaments, keychains, and much more! They create items using an Epson Sublimation Printer, a Silhouette Cameo, and thanks to generous donations from Cricut, a variety of Cricut products. Each young adult gets hands-on experience creating items for customers. In addition to that, they get to learn about the complete sales experience.
Balloon Bouquet Enterprise
Young adults have the opportunity to learn about the complete sales process by participating in our program. They create and design balloon bouquets and decor for clients.
Laser cutting and Engraving Enterprise
Young adults have the opportunity to create items such as keychains, signs, door hangers, engraved cutting boards, coasters, and much more using our Glowforge. They learn basic computer skills in order to use the Glowforge platform.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Skills Transitioning and Employment Pathways to Success strives to create more vocational training and employment opportunities for adults with disabilities in our community. We believe all individuals deserve the opportunity to discover and grow their unique talents with the world.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We currently have two enterprises: balloon designs by S.T.E.P.S. and shirt, socks, and mask designs by S.T.E.P.S. Both enterprises allow our young adults to experience sales from start to finish. They learn in a hands-on setting that gives them the freedom to explore their talents with the guidance of staff members if needed. Following a training period, which varies for each young adult based on their needs, they have the opportunity to become employed with one of our enterprises where they will earn $7.25 per hour for their work.
As we grow, we plan to expand our enterprise opportunities for our young adults in order to increase our impact. We are currently fundraising to begin an engraving and laser cutting enterprise.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
S.T.E.P.S. was founded by a former special education teacher with decades of experience, which has given her unique insight in the ideal way to train our young adults. We strive to create an ideal environment for each young adult to learn and grow.
