Mission

RestoreHER US. America Inc (RestoreHER) is a policy advocacy, diversion, and reentry organization based in Georgia. RestoreHER addresses the social determinants of criminalization and social inequities through policy advocacy of all directly impacted women of color inclusive of incarcerated pregnant women. We invest in the pre-arrest diversion of directly impacted women. RestoreHER also supports the reentry process by protecting the dignity, restoring rights, and promoting opportunities for formerly incarcerated women of color. Our mission is to enhance the lives of directly impacted women and work in partnership with those women to end mass incarceration for women of color and pregnant women.

What we aim to solve

The criminal justice system and the reform movement have not traditionally considered the needs of women. Pregnant women present unique challenges for correctional systems that are inadequately addressed. Even though women are the fastest growing population of incarcerated people in the United States, there is limited data regarding incarcerated women or studies of gender difference in incarceration. More than 80% of incarcerated women are primary caretakers, disproportionately women of color, low income, have mental health issues, and suffer the trauma of surviving some type of abuse. However, incarcerated women have been made “invisible” and marginalized due to the “masculine” orientation, misogyny and militaristic nature of prison systems. These practices of the “justice” system can have serious lasting safety and health implications resulting in women returning to their communities in far worse condition than when they entered the system.

National DIGNITY Campaign

RestoreHER US.America leads the National "DIGNITY" Campaign that advocates to ban shackling, solitary confinement, and alternative sentencing through state and federal legislations, Dignity For Incarcerated Women Act and Women's CARE Act (WCA).

RestoreHER "Dignity For Incarcerated Women Act" collaborates with justice-involved women, communities, and stakeholders to expand shackling and solitary confinement legislation throughout the country, currently assisting in the passing of Dignity Bills in 21 states. RestoreHER also provided advocacy that was instrumental in the of passing the historical First Step Act which included providing the language in HR5682, banning shackling of women in federal custody.

The Women's C.A.R.E. (Childbirth Alternatives, Resources, and Education) Act will provide alternative solutions for pregnant women in Georgia. Pregnant women will be deferred not to start their prison sentence until 12 weeks postpartum. This legislation is imperative to the welfare and harm reduction of the directly impacted pregnant women. More important, this legislation will create a safer, healthier environment for all.

RestoreHER is launching the D.A.T.A. (Data Access for Transparency and Accountability) IS LIFE campaign to reintroduce data collection of maintaining recorded data of all women, pregnancies, and outcomes inclusive of juveniles and mentally ill for state, county, private, and local correctional facilities located in the state of Georgia. RestoreHER Founder, Pamela Winn created a curriculum that offers a comprehensive wellness, rehabilitation, and leadership program that was awarded the 2019 Soros Justice Fellowship.

The curriculum is derived from a "participatory process" that combines the lived experiences of directly impacted women and an advisory board of seasoned professionals through three components: RENEW your mind, REBUILD your life, and RESTORE your rights. The uniqueness of the curriculum is that it’s the first and only that combines diversion through trauma care, wellness, socio-economic referrals, reentry self-help tools, and leadership training to advance the quality of life, create opportunities, and promote policy change. T.R.A.S.H. (Traumatic Realities American Society Hides) highlights the "real" stories of lived experiences of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women with the criminal justice system.

T.R.A.S.H. brings awareness and educates the community of the unmet needs and torturous treatment of women that perpetuates more harm leaving women to return home in a worse condition than when they entered the criminal justice system.

HERhealth promotes health and economic equity for justice involved women of color. RestoreHER recognizes the deficiency of gynecological and obstetric care for women of color in the south. In partnership with SisterLove, our mobile unit will provide routine perinatal and gynecological care in rural Georgia's 70 counties without women's healthcare. RestoreHER maintains a USDA farming license to integrate education, promote wellness, and entrepreneurship in growing food and beekeeping. Justice involved women learn how to grow their own food, create community gardens, and sell their products to local businesses and at farmer's markets.

Informing Marginalized Peoples Power And Cultivating Transformation (ImPPacT) is a coalition of directly impacted led organizations across Georgia initiated by RestoreHER. ImPPacT seeks to mobilize, educate, register, and engage more than 100K eligible Georgians with felony convictions to exercise their right to vote. Decarceration in our view goes far beyond closing jails and prisons, it is about engaging directly impacted people to come together, to mobilize our leadership and leverage our collective power to neutralize collateral consequences. ImPPact unites our voices and our vote to choose the representatives, the issues that will impact their lives, and resources needed to improve the health and safety of their communities.

RestoreHER identified that formerly incarcerated socioeconomic and healthcare needs of women were not being met when returning to the community due to lack of technology, transportation, awareness, and the plain lack of gender specific resources available. RestoreHER is bridging the gap by producing a reentry mobile app, IMPACT (Inform Marginalized People And Cultivate Transformation). RestoreHER has initiated an affordable shipping-living housing for ownership. HERcommunity will provide economic equity and establish generational wealth for directly impacted women, veterans, and marginalized people with an annual income of $30K. RestoreHER is actively seeking funding to purchase 50 acres and the development of land for more than 100 units in South Fulton, Georgia. Homeownership is the cornerstone of generational wealth to give hope, help, healing, and deserving for ALL people.

RestoreHER believes in the safe security of stable housing of justice-involved women. HERhouse uses the SAFE housing model to provide emergency and supportive rental housing throughout Georgia and Alabama. Emergency shelter for justice involved women returning to the community homeless and rental living space for directly impacted women that face discrimination due to criminal backgrounds for a felony conviction.

RestoreHER has a vision of a world where women of color impacted by mass criminalization and incarceration receive gender-based education, rehabilitation, and full restoration of their rights, so that they can move forward with hope, dignity, and opportunities to make important contributions in their communities. To achieve this, we need to shift the weight from a criminal justice system driven by perpetual punishment and dehumanization to one rooted in healing, accountability, transformation, and the recognition of each woman’s inherent dignity and right to reach their full potential.

RestoreHER has a Southern criminal legal transformation strategy, which is centering lived experience and research to inform policy change initiating in the south and scaling nationally. Our strategy has been successfully tested, and focused in the following areas:

Since our founding, RestoreHER has successfully and extensively advocated for criminal justice policy reform, contributing to the passage of 21 DIGNITY for Incarcerated Women's Bills throughout the South and in states across the country; lending Pamela's language related to incarcerated women's conditions of confinement, shackling during pregnancy, labor and postpartum, and solitary confinement to Federal Legislation the First Step Act; Passed probation and parole reform in Georgia, among other efforts. From speaking engagements, to testimony, bill drafting, and implementation. We work in collaboration with many partners, and have extensive reach through our network, we advance leadership and education to encourage engagement in our programs, and working to fulfill our mission.

In 4 years, RestoreHER has become an effective and visionary leader in the criminal justice space, particularly in Georgia where we are based, extending throughout the South the Country and DC. Our current programs are all envisioned to be scaled and replicated - from legislation to advancing civic engagement, to affordable housing, and homeownership - the ideas we are building are intended to be shared, and evolve to truly transform the lives of people directly impacted by incarceration.
