What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Throughout my entire career in law enforcement I always felt like there was something missing when it came to support for law enforcement in Georgia. There are many different national organizations officers can join, but they all offer very specific benefits. So, in order to receive all of these benefits, you have to be a paying member to several different organizations. I wanted to find a fix for this, so I began speaking with several different community leaders including Sheriffs, Chiefs, Mayors, County Commissioners, Philanthropic Leaders, and actual officers to see what the best solution would be for this. The overwhelming response was that it should be a statewide nonprofit organization that focused on Georgia Law Enforcement and offered every service that all of the other national organizations had to offer, but under one umbrella and only one membership fee.

Fundraising for Injured/Fallen Police Officers

This is a coordinated effort through various community outreach resources to initiate and operate fundraisers and events to supplement an officer's income in the event that they are out of work for an extended period of time due to injury or illness, or killed in the line of duty. This gives their family the ability to recover in times of need.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Georgia Law Enforcement Organization's mission is to provide overall support to Georgia's Law Enforcement Officers in their professional, and personal lives, through various benefits and community outreach resources.

Our strategy is to simply narrow down our focus to officers only in the state of Georgia to reduce the effects of being spread too thin on a national platform. We believe this allows us to better serve the officers in this state in a much more meaningful and supportive way.

Our organization primarily focuses on officer's whom have been killed in the line of duty, and officers who are sick/injured and out of work. We work with their families to provide financial and emotional support to get through those difficult times. To do this, we utilize our social media outlets, which have a monthly audience of 21,000,000 people, and we coordinate fundraisers and events for those families.

In 2019, our first full year of operation, we coordinated 4 fundraisers for families who lost an officer and delivered 100% of the proceeds to those families. We have also boosted our social media reach from 4,000,000 people in January to 21,000,000 people in December, and developed our website to create interactive content that will bring more traffic to the page.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
