What we aim to solve
Spokane is the largest medical hub between Seattle, WA and Minneapolis, MN. Our medical community services Southern British Columbia and Alberta Canada, Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota. Spokane has some of the most innovative treatment options and clinical trials available, which results in our medical community serving a growing number of patients from across the country. Currently, there is no lodging facility specifically for patients when they travel into Spokane for treatment. They are forced to stay in hotels or come up with some other lodging options to receive life-saving treatment. In many cases, patients choose lesser treatment options because they cannot afford lodging. The American Cancer Society estimates that there are close to 1.7 million new cancer cases diagnosed each year in the US. Approximately 85,000 of those are in the Pacific Northwest and surrounding area.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Currently, Henry’s House (HH) is located in Stacey Henry's private residence on the northside of Spokane and offers free lodging to patients and their caregivers when in Spokane for cancer treatment. HH provides a two-bedroom apartment for long term stays (>5 days) and two single bedrooms on the main floor for shortterm stays (<5 days). We partner with all of the local oncology teams, who meet the patients, determine their lodging need and make sure all of the registration forms are signed. Since officially opened our doors in 2019, those needing lodging have increased to the point where we are turning away guests.
Our solution is to build a facility that has the following attributes:
• Has individual rooms/suites for 25+ cancer patients and their caregivers
• Meets the needs of the whole patient (physical, emotional and medical) as well as helping the caregiver through the process
• Allows for/encourages opportunities for patients and caregivers to meet each other, share stories and develop a network of people battling cancer together
• Is a safe place for those with special considerations (immune-compromised, disabled [ADA Compliant], etc.)
• Is an adults-only facility
• Is in a residential area, near the hospitals and treatment facilities
• Has common areas where visitors can meet with the patient(s) and patients can socialize, without compromising the health of themselves or others
• Encourages local groups/organizations to visit, make meals for, do crafts with, and spend time with the patients/caregivers
This facility would be the only one of its kind in Spokane County and would create a community of patients/caregivers/volunteers that walk through the cancer journey together, supporting one-another.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our Board of Directors and key advisors see the need for, and has the vision of, a larger facility. We are in discussions with potential investors to help us purchase property for this expansion. The expansion could take one of 3 forms: Renovation, New Build or a combination of a Renovation and new build. We have an Architect and Commercial Builder already committed to this expansion.
We are implementing a critical fundraising plan which includes:
• Hiring Fundraising Professionals - These people will be added to the team as we grow, to help develop bigger projects such as Gala's, sporting tournaments (dodgeball, bowling, etc) and/or fun
runs. We would ask that they help bring in other cancer non-profits and Foundations as partners.
• Annual Events - Wine Walk , Annual costume party
• Foundation Grants (public and private money)
• Corporate and Individual Donations
• Sponsorship of specific rooms/items within the new building - via corporate or individual donors
• Virtual plan for fundraising is also in the works and will be completed by June 2020
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our Founder, Board of Directors and Key Advisors have vast experience in multiple areas.
• We have vast experience managing large (>$60M) budgets, a large workforce and expertise logistics.
• We have a Lawyer with over 35 years of experience in human resources and actuarial science.
• We have extensive experience is assisting startup companies.
• We have a practicing Occupational Therapist and an Oncology Patient Navigator for Providence Health Care who understand the Adult Cancer population and also work to connect patients with nonprofit groups in Spokane that can help them during their treatment cycle.
• We have experts in design, marketing and sales.
• We have a combined 50 years experience in non-profit fundraising.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Moving the nonprofit from a private residence into its own facility will enhance the credibility of the nonprofit and our cause.
We have identified many local businesses and individuals within the Spokane area that want to be a part of the solution.
We are working with a Commercial Real Estate Broker and have identified the types and locations of properties.
We have developed relationships with a local Architect and Commercial Builder who will be assisting us with our build.
We partner with the four oncology treatment groups in the area.
