Maximize Lives Saved

Smyth Animal Rescue (SAR) has saved almost 2,000 animals since 2019. SAR receives dogs and cats from Smyth County Animal Shelter, Smyth County Humane Society and other regional rescue groups that have been sponsored for rescue and/or committed to rescue. When possible, animals in our care are tested for common diseases, assessed behaviorally, provided with necessary medical care, vaccinated and altered before they are transferred. With SAR pulling a high percentage of animals at the county public kill-shelter, they had the lowest euthanasia rate EVER in 2021. Our goal is to save more lives!

Population(s) Served
Adults

Smyth Animal Rescue (SAR) has a cargo transport van. Our goal this year is to increase the number of transports and to increase the number of animals per transport in support of the Smyth County Humane Society and the Smyth County Animal Shelter. In 2021, SAR travelled 20,575 miles to assist over 800 animals on their journey’s to find loving, forever homes.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Our community outreach program strives to educate the public on what constitutes adequate care and treatment of pets and works directly with the public to provide necessary resources to improve the quality of life for their pets. Over seventeen percent of Smyth County residents live in poverty, many of whom are either disabled, elderly and/or without transportation. Community outreach works with these individuals to resolve any issues so that the pet can stay in its home with adequate care such as low cost or free pet food, wellness services, spay/neuter surgery, hygiene or grooming, and pet supplies.
