Mission

Habitat for Humanity believes that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. We build and repair houses in the Lewis-Clark Valley using volunteer labor and donations. Our partner families purchase these houses through no-profit no or-interest mortgage loans. As a ecumenical nonprofit, we build with people in need regardless of race or religion, we welcome volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds.

There is a significant need for affordable home ownership in the L-C valley. X out of X renters in the L-C Valley meet our Home ownership Program income requirements and face housing problems such as overcrowding, inadequate or incomplete kitchen or plumbing facilities, and the cost-burden of high rent (spending more than 30% of income on housing). Even one family without safe, stable, affordable housing is one too many. The Lewis-Clark Valley has an affordable housing dilemma with rising rents, flat-lining wages, and low vacancy rates. There is also limited rental housing for large families needing more than two or three bedrooms. This leads to overcrowding in smaller units and extremely low vacancy rates in larger units.

Affordable Home Ownership

L-C Valley Habitat for Humanity partners with individuals and families in need of a safe affordable place to call home. We believe that home is the beginning of a strong foundation. A Habitat home helps families develop a stable financial future, and a healthy place for a family and children to grow and thrive.

Habitat homeowners achieve strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter. Shelter they helped build. They complete hundreds of hours of sweat equity building their own home and homes of other Habitat families, attend financial workshops and home buyer classes, save for their closing costs and pay an affordable mortgage. Habitat homeowners are active participants in building a better future for themselves and their families. They get a hand up, not a handout.

There are three main criteria to apply for a Habitat Home:
*Ability to pay,
*Need for housing, and
*Willingness to partner with Habitat.

To be considered, you need to meet the following qualifications:
*Lived or worked in Asotin or Nez Perce County for at least the last year
*Be living in inadequate housing (problems with structure, electrical, or heating for example)
*Be willing to fulfill partnership obligations, including 300-400 hours of sweat equity helping to build your home.
*Your income must fall within 30-60% of Area Median Income for Asotin & Nez Perce Counties according to the Housing and Urban Development Administration (HUD).

Annually, L-C Valley Habitat for Humanity engages over 100 local volunteers for a total of 4,000 volunteer hours. Volunteers contribute to our mission by participating in home construction and repair projects, at the Habitat Thrift Store, in the administrative office, and through serving on our board of director and operating committees.

L-C Valley Habitat for Humanity assists low-income individuals who already own their home with affordable home repairs that keep their home from declining in condition, improve safety, or improve energy efficiency.

The L-C Habitat Store operates a home Improvement store; open to the public. The Habitat Store sell quality donated home furnishings, furniture, and building supplies at a fraction of the original cost.

The L-C Valley Habitat Store generates revenue to support its mission. In addition, the store provides low-cost building materials, keeps usable materials out of landfills, and increases the breadth of donations Habitat can accept.

Knowledge is power. The information from these classes will provide knowledge and support for individuals and partners to better manage their income, saving and assets. This program provides 6-hour courses, in three two-hour session, on financial literacy four times a year, with a total of 50 participants.

The course covers the following topics: developing a family budget and following it; setting long-term financial goals; increasing savings paying off debt; making wise consumer choices; investing; insurance and mortgage. The cost of the course is $25 per household. After successful completion of the course, students receive a $25 Happy Day Restaurant gift card per household. Childcare and dinners are provided for all evening classes.

3. To provide four financial literacy courses, once a quarter in 2020
4. To secure funding and implement a Tool Loan Closet by August 2020.
5. To secure funding and make available a Block Party Trailer.
6. To plan and implement a signature fund raising event by October 2020.
7. Increase board members from 5 to 10 by December 2020

3. To provide four financial literacy courses, once a quarter in 2020

5. To secure funding and make available a Block Party Trailer.
6. To plan and implement a signature fund raising event by October 2020.
7. Committed ED and Board to identifying and recruiting strong new members to our board.

In FY20 So Far:
1. We have initiated a new website.
2. We have updated our technology through grant funding.
3. We have implemented a new database that will allow us to tract and report volunteer, donor, and mortgage management.
4. We have increased our board from 5 to 8 members as of April 2020.
