What we aim to solve
The dance audience is slowly shrinking as many performing arts organizations struggle to produce their work in theaters. Due to rising rents and the desire to fairly compensate theater staff, dancers, and other collaborators, producing traditional dance repertory concerts have become financially impossible for small organizations. In addition, these financial difficulties are compounded by the lack of access created by the need to charge higher ticket prices and a lack of funds for marketing and outreach. Low-income communities and underserved populations often are not able to attend dance concerts or are not offered the opportunity.

Selah Dance Collective Repertory Concerts
Selah Dance Collective, Inc (or SELAH), a Santa Barbara-based contemporary dance company, creates and performs worldwide original work by artistic director and founder Meredith Cabaniss. Founded in 2014, SELAH has captured the attention of fellow artists, presenters, and audiences with its innovative work and challenging physicality grounded by a focus to make dance more accessible and relatable to all people. Known for our personality, dynamic style, and technical versatility, SELAH explores the nature of human existence through the art of movement.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to make dance more accessible and relatable to all people by creating educational experiences through performance, and maintaining a platform for community dance works and emerging artists through outreach, education, and mentorship.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We aim to do these things through creating strategic partnerships with other local organizations and businesses that will allow us to produce low-cost performances that serve the community better. Our programming has shifted to include more "pop up" style residencies and performances that allow us to take dance out of the theater and bring it directly into the community. Instead of renting out costly theaters, we have rented out storefronts to create collaborative arts pop ups and created relationships with local schools to develop partnerships that are mutually beneficial.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are a young company filled with vibrant and multi-talented artists and collaborators. We do all of our work in-house - meaning not just the board members but our dance company members as well! Whether it be through marketing, brand partnerships, education and outreach, or visual art, we use all of the tools at our disposal to create high-quality performances and events. We also strategically work with schools and other local nonprofits to share costs and develop more extensive outreach programs in order to create a broader reach.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
To this date we have successfully produced 12 independent evenings of dance, music, and visual arts for the community. We also have developed a workshop program and successfully awarded 5 scholarships. Our most recent project had roughly 400 attendees over the course of the project. We hope to expand all of these programs next year. In the spring, we will hold our annual repertory concert in collaboration with a local junior high school and invite other professional companies to take part in workshops and master classes for the community. In the summer we will have our second annual Performance Workshop. And in the fall we will reprise our RE: Live series with the help of a local nonprofit who has offered to partner with us in creating more accessible shows and more relatable content.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
