Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
VBF currently has two community gardens (Wilson County Civic League and the City of Lebanon) installed, focused on community access; three school community gardens (Byars Dowdy, Sam Houston Elementary, and Coles Ferry), and a teaching garden at the Lebanon Youth Academy. VBF believes a partnership with Master Gardeners of Wilson County will enhance our programs, provide teaching opportunities for children and adults, and provide volunteer and continued education opportunities for local and surrounding county master gardeners. Master Gardeners of Wilson County can and will be utilized for the following:
• Installation of additional school and community gardens
• Cooking classes for children and adults
• School-age summer gardening camp
• Health, nutrition, and gardening workshops
• Gardening and nutrition courses
VBF thrives to build healthier communities in our local and surrounding areas.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We are currently partnered with Lebanon Special School District’s School Health Coordinator, UT/TSU Extension Wilson County, Master Gardeners of Wilson County, Wilson County Health Department, and the City of Lebanon. With these partnerships, we are able to install gardens, implement programs, and maintain the school and community gardens within the local community. With the help of the members of VBF, the resources listed, and a financial accounting firm, our organization will be working to implement projects to effectively impact communities most affected by health and financial disparities.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our gardening team consists of our nonprofit's executive director (fire captain and Wilson County Master
Gardener), program director (former elementary & middle school teacher and educational assistant, Wilson
County Master Gardener), nutrition director (UT Extension Nutrition and Consumer Education Program
Extension Agent), education director (current elementary teacher and former FFA leader), school principals,
school teachers, and the school district's coordinated school health/homeless liaison.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?

- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
