What we aim to solve
Having access to others and their communities has been an elusive dream for many differently-abled people, especially those with significant physical and cognitive differences. For as long as records have been kept, people living with disabilities have been regarded and treated differently. Like many marginalized groups of people, they have been feared, separated, isolated, mistreated, ridiculed, put on display and exploited and denied medical treatment because they are being perceived as different. Although the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) assures equal opportunities in education and employment for people with disabilities (PWD) and prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability, people with disabilities remain overrepresented among America’s poor and undereducated. Our work centers around our vision of PWD having the connections and resources needed to increase their potential for successful outcomes and broaden their options in their pursuits of socioeconomic growth.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Educational Equity Program
Accessibility Bridge Corporation’s Educational Equity Program is designed to provide educational resources for students with disabilities that will assist in bridging the gap in the educational divide. Equity in education is a global issue and is influenced by many factors and requires putting systems in place to ensure that every student has equal chances for success.
This necessitates understanding the unique challenges and barriers faced by students with disabilities and providing additional supports to help them overcome those barriers. This may not guarantee equal outcomes, but it boosts equal opportunities for success. Education is critical in determining how people with disabilities spend their adult life – higher levels of education mean higher earnings, better health, and a longer life.
Goals of this initiative include:
• Supplying devices, equipment and technology that allows for digital equity
• Providing informational resources that illustrate educational options and best practices for students with autism or intellectual impairments
• Providing access to technology training and academic tutoring
Additional Goals of this initiative specific to students with spectrum, developmental or intellectual disorders include:
• Providing informational resources that illustrate educational options and best practices specifically for students with autism or intellectual impairments
• Providing access to technology training and academic tutoring
• Offering scholarships to students with intellectual impairments enrolled in 2 to 4-year post-secondary transition programs
Crossing Bridges Awards Program
Every day, people with disabilities are making progress in their journey to lead valuable and meaningful lives. Accessibility Bridge ensures they're supported in their efforts by showing that we appreciate and value their contributions and achievements by recognizing them through our Crossing Bridges awards.
Nominations are ongoing and you may nominate multiple people. A selection committee from our nonprofit will decide which nominees will receive an acknowledgement and awards are given yearly at our annual Evening of Disability Acceptance Event.
Brick 44 Athletic Initiative
While sport has value in everyone's life, it’s more important in the lives of people with disabilities (PWD). Unbeknownst to many, athletes with disabilities (AWD) compete in sports at elite levels where qualifying times are fractions behind athletes without disabilities. Competitive sports for AWD has dramatically increased over the past 20 years in both disability-specific competitions and mainstream sporting events beside able-bodied competitors.
Brick 44's goal is to bring awareness, resources, and support to competitive AWD. Participation in athletic activities is the context in which people form friendships, develop skills and competencies, express creativity, achieve mental and physical health, and determine meaning and purpose in life.
This initiative also aims to improve and offer better health outcomes for PWD. In typically developing children, participation in sports has been proven to be positively correlated to physical and psycho-social health outcomes.
Winter's Closet
Winter's closet is an initiative where Accessibility Bridge provides needed clothing and warm items during the cold months (October-February) to people with disabilities and their families. Although items are distributed from October-February, we accept new items year-round to ensure that we're able to meet the needs of many families when the cold season comes around.
ACCESSIBILITY BRIDGE FOOD PANTRY
In order to expand our outreach and service areas, the Accessibility Bridge Corporation has opened an online food pantry to make food more accessible in under served communities where families composed of people with disabilities and limited financial resources aren't able to access food through traditional grocery stores or food pantries. This initiative allows us the flexibility of providing nonperishable food items to our clients all over the United States.
For our local communities (MD, VA, DC), we are able to provide perishable food and drink items as they are available.
WE CARE PACKAGES
According to the US National Library of Medicine, having friendships and interpersonal social connections enhances an individual’s well-being and is a normal and expected necessity of life. Many people with disabilities are socially excluded and are out of mainstream society. We all desire and deserve to have meaningful friendships and relationships where we feel loved and appreciated. This need is felt by people with disabilities also.
Accessibility Bridge sends "We Care" Packages to registered clients with the goal of supporting their endeavors and letting them know that there are people who thinks of them, wants them to continue to push forward, and thinks they're amazing!
Knowing someone cared to think about them and send an unsolicited gift puts a sparkle in the eye and a smile across their face. It's this realization that someone cares...We Care!
Our We Care Packages help make and strengthen human connections which is essential n the growth of a person with a disability.
Bridge 2 Success Scholarship
Accessibility Bridge recognizes students with intellectual disabilities (ID) in their pursuits of post-secondary vocational or academic training by offering scholarships to assist with this courageous and necessary step towards independence, economic stability, educational equity and social inclusion. College is disproportionately costly for students in College Transition Programs (CTP) designed to support students with ID wanting to continue academic, career, and independent living instruction to prepare for gainful employment. Costs to attend CTP programs are equal to or greater than traditional college programs and current federal student loan regulations prohibit students in CTP programs from qualifying for certain federal student loan funding, causing most or all expenses to be out of pocket.
The Bridge 2 Success scholarship is open to students anywhere in the United States seeking technical, vocational degrees, or certificates from a 2- or 4-year College or University.
