Honoring Veteran Legacies

The Eternal Salute

Mission

Our mission is to honor senior veterans in their communities and beyond and to guard and preserve their legacies for future generations. We do this by taking them to various community events where they will receive honor, museums and ceremonies that relate to their service and help them to heal, and also by recording their stories, pairing them with engaging video and lesson plans for teachers to use for free, in various subject areas...not just history class! Through this multi-discipline approach, their sacrifices and service won't be forgotten and will penetrate into the student's minds about how their service is still relevant and personal to all of us, even today. Many are racing to record stories, especially of WWII veterans--but we want the videos actively USED in our classrooms.

Honoring Senior Veterans in Their Communities

We have a LOT of military/veteran presence in our area, and many organizations strive to honor our veterans; however, many have dinners and events where they cost a lot to attend--they are fundraisers themselves. Our senior veterans are often on limited incomes and cannot afford $100 a plate dinners, so we seek community support to be able to purchase their seats at these events where their service and sacrifice will be recognized and revered by those in the military or veterans, and can be displayed for those community members who are not military-related. In addition, we take our veterans to schools where they can share their stories with children to help them better understand and retain the lessons of history and the values of those who have served our country.

Veterans

To honor our senior veterans, especially as we continue to lose them, we want to honor their desires to have their stories told, to help instill in the younger generations concepts of sacrifice, duty, courage, honor, patriotism, etc. We are getting their stories on video currently, and plan to edit the videos to be engaging, attaching lesson plans and state standards to make them easy for teachers to incorporate into their lesson plans, and house them in a central site where teachers can access them for multiple subjects and grade levels, free of charge. We feel an urgency to capture their stories as we have only about 300,000 WWII veterans still alive, and we are losing our Korean and Vietnam veterans too, many times at much earlier ages than our WWII veterans because of what they were exposed to while in the military, as well as other environmental and health factors.
