Giving Arizona public education the shine it deserves.
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our organization works to spotlight the amazing work being done by public schools (both district and public charter schools). We do this through a variety of recognition programs such as Arizona Teacher of the Year (which elevates the teaching profession) and A+ Schools of Excellence which awards exemplary schools with the coveted A+ distinction. We also know that schools need a leg-up on the pathway to success, so we provide the Arizona Spelling Bee (which supports literacy and public speaking for students), the Principals Leadership Academy of Arizona (which trains emerging school leaders), and teachSTEM, a new program for high school students that inspires them to become STEM teachers.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Arizona Teacher of the Year
Recognizes 10 outstanding Arizona educators each year. The winner goes on to represent Arizona in the National Teacher of the Year competition.
teachSTEM
A program for 9th-12th grade students that provides STEM Coaches to teach students needed STEM skills for workforce preparedness, including an emphasis on becoming STEM teachers.
A+ Schools of Excellence Award program
The highest state-level award a public schools can receive. The a+ School of Excellence Award program is the only comprehensive school assessment program in Arizona. Schools are examined based on all aspects of success, not just test scores.
Principals Leadership Academy of Arizona
Based on the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders developed by the CCSSO, the Principals Leadership Academy is a 9-month training program for emerging school leaders.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goals are to shine a light on the amazing work that public schools are doing, often against seemingly insurmountable odds, and to provide programs that support schools on a pathway to success.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We partner with schools and districts throughout the state to ensure that they know about AEF's programs and know how to access them. We also work with higher education to reach pre-service teachers and with other nonprofits throughout the state to reach principals, superintendents, and other administrators.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
AEF has strong partnerships with corporations, higher education, and other community partners who are interested in supporting and celebrating the work of public schools.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Annually, AEF's programs reach over 500,000 students, teachers, and administrators in over 2,000 schools throughout Arizona. Programs like Arizona Teacher of the Year and A+ School of Excellence are used as recruiting tools by districts and local decision-makers to draw industry to local communities. We also know that programs like Teacher of the Year bring recognition to the teaching profession and a lack of respect and recognition is one of the reasons many teachers cite they are leaving the profession. teachSTEM is AEF's next level work, combining our Teacher of the Year program with high schools offering programs for students who want to become teachers.

- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
