THE ACTUARIAL PROFESSION IS A SMALL, NICHE PROFESSIONAL STEM FIELD THAT HAS BEEN GRAPPLING WITH DIVERSITY & INCLUSION CHALLENGES FOR MANY YEARS. THE ACTUARIAL FIELD LAGS BEHIND MANY INDUSTRIES AND NEARLY ALL OTHER STEM FIELDS IN MEMBERSHIP DIVERSITY. MANY ACTIONS ARE BEING TAKEN WITHIN ACTUARIAL ORGANIZATIONS TO TRY TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES. THERE HAS BEEN MUCH FOCUS GIVEN TO INCREASING BLACK AND LATINX REPRESENTATION, BUT THERE HAS NOT BEEN ADEQUATE DISCUSSION AND ACTION TAKEN TO HELP THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY IN OUR PROFESSION. SAGAA SEEKS TO HELP LGBTQ+ ACTUARIES TO THRIVE IN THEIR CAREERS. BY PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACTUARIES TO LEARN ABOUT CHALLENGES LGBTQ+ PEOPLE FACE, WE SEEK TO ACHIEVE BROADER INCLUSION AND ACCEPTANCE WITHIN ACTUARIAL WORKPLACES.

SAGAA ENGAGES IN UNIVERSITY OUTREACH THROUGH VARIOUS INITIATIVES THAT STRIVE TO SUPPORT ASPIRING LGBTQ+ ACTUARIES. IN THE CURRENT YEAR, SAGAA COSPONSORED NETWORKING EVENTS IN NEW YORK CITY AND ATLANTA, DELIVERED BESPOKE PRESENTATIONS TAILORED TO THE NEEDS OF SPONSORING ORGANIZATIONS, JOINED PANELS, OFFERED PRESENTATIONS, AND REPRESENTED THE COMMUNITY AT MULTIPLE INDUSTRY EVENTS, EFFECTIVELY COLLABORATED WITH OTHER ACTUARIAL AFFINITY GROUPS TO ADVANCE DEI IN THE INDUSTRY, AND PRESENTED BIASES AND LGBTQ+ ISSUES IN INSURANCE INDUSTRY-WIDE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SOA DRAWING 2,000+ ATTENDEES.IN 2023, SCHOLARSHIPS WERE AWARDED TO NINE QUALIFIED LGBTQ+ STUDENTS THAT ARE PURSUING AN ACTUARIAL CAREER (EACH $2,500).

SAGAA FORMED THE REGULATORY AND ADVOCACY COMMITTEE (RAC) IN Q4 2023. THE RAC SEEKS TO ENGAGE WITH INDUSTRY, REGULATORS, AND INTERESTED PARTIES TO EVALUATE CURRENT AND PROPOSED REGULATIONS AND PRACTIVES IN THE INSURANCE AND RETIREMENT INDUSTRY THAT COULD IMPACT THE LGTBQ+ COMMUNITY AND ADVOCATE FOR SPECIFIC POLICIES AND CHANGES WHERE APPROPRIATE. THE RAC WILL BE A LEADER IN EMERGING TOPICS AND ISSUES IN THIS SPACE, AND WILL BE AVAILABLE TO WORK WITH COMPANIES WHO WANT TO REVIEW HOW THEIR PRODUCTS AND PROCESSSES CAN BE MORE ACCOMODATING TO LGTBQ+ INDIVIDUALS.
