THE ACTUARIAL PROFESSION IS A SMALL, NICHE PROFESSIONAL STEM FIELD THAT HAS BEEN GRAPPLING WITH DIVERSITY & INCLUSION CHALLENGES FOR MANY YEARS. THE ACTUARIAL FIELD LAGS BEHIND MANY INDUSTRIES AND NEARLY ALL OTHER STEM FIELDS IN MEMBERSHIP DIVERSITY. MANY ACTIONS ARE BEING TAKEN WITHIN ACTUARIAL ORGANIZATIONS TO TRY TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES. THERE HAS BEEN MUCH FOCUS GIVEN TO INCREASING BLACK AND LATINX REPRESENTATION, BUT THERE HAS NOT BEEN ADEQUATE DISCUSSION AND ACTION TAKEN TO HELP THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY IN OUR PROFESSION. SAGAA SEEKS TO HELP LGBTQ+ ACTUARIES TO THRIVE IN THEIR CAREERS. BY PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACTUARIES TO LEARN ABOUT CHALLENGES LGBTQ+ PEOPLE FACE, WE SEEK TO ACHIEVE BROADER INCLUSION AND ACCEPTANCE WITHIN ACTUARIAL WORKPLACES.

SAGAA ENGAGES IN UNIVERSITY OUTREACH THROUGH VARIOUS INITIATIVES THAT STRIVE TO SUPPORT ASPIRING LGBTQ+ ACTUARIES. WE PLAN TO PROVIDE RESUME AND INTERVIEW WORKSHOPS FOR STUDENTS, ORGANIZE A MENTORING PROGRAM, AND ASSEMBLE A RESUME BOOK THAT CAN BE GIVEN TO COMPANIES TO HELP THEM TO HIRE DIVERSE CANDIDATES FOR INTERNSHIPS OR FULL-TIME POSITIONS. THE UNIVERSITY EDUCATION COMMITTEE ORGANIZES THESE EFFORTS, AND IN THE FUTURE, WE PLAN TO HAVE HUMAN RESOURCES REPRESENTATIVES FROM ACTUARIAL EMPLOYERS ASSISTING US IN PROVIDING WORKSHOPS. OUR OUTREACH IS CURRENTLY VIRTUAL WITH PLANS TO BE INPERSON ON CAMPUSES POST-COVID.

SAGAA PROVIDES PRESENTATIONS, WEBINARS AND IN-PERSON TRAININGS ON DIVERSITY & INCLUSION TOPICS THAT SPECIFICALLY RELATE TO THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY, SUCH AS LGBT 101 AND ALLYSHIP. THESE TRAININGS WILL BE GIVEN AT INDUSTRY MEETINGS ORGANIZED BY THE SOCIETY OF ACTUARIES AND CASUALTY ACTUARIAL SOCIETY, IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING TRAINING TO SPECIFIC COMPANIES THAT EMPLOY ACTUARIES. THIS IS MANAGED BY THE SAGAA EDUCATION COMMITTEE. THE ACTIVITY HAS BEEN DONE ONLINE THUS FAR DUE TO COVID, BUT WE PLAN TO ATTEND IN-PERSON GATHERINGS WHEN IT IS SAFE TO DO SO.
