Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Evergreen Action (c4) and Evergreen Collaborative (c3) were founded in January 2020 with the goal of advancing bold policy to address the most pressing, existential crisis of our time: the climate crisis. Evergreen’s roots rose out of Governor Jay Inslee’s campaign as a “climate candidate” for President in the 2020 election cycle. Inslee’s platform turned into the Evergreen Climate Action Plan, which calls for 100% clean energy standards, major investments in good jobs building clean energy, as well as a deep commitment to environmental justice and bringing the fossil fuel era to a close. We have quickly made a name for ourselves as nimble, effective policy advocates, securing real policy results with lasting impacts.

Approach & Impact
Since our launch, Evergreen has played a pivotal role in the development and advancement of federal climate policy – including many of the early actions taken by the Biden administration, and ultimately culminating in the passage of the most significant federal climate investment in American history: the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). We have quickly become one of the most influential climate policy organizations in the country. Evergreen is not only a trusted source with lawmakers and advocates, but is also frequently referenced in the press as go-to experts on federal climate policy - you’ll see us cited almost daily in national media on the topic.

We deploy three key strategies to achieve our impact:
1. Craft bold, actionable policy products outlining the roadmap for decision-makers to effectively tackle the climate crisis.

2. Use strategic campaign-style media and digital communications to build awareness, support, and momentum for that policy vision.

3. Use effective direct advocacy to make those policies a reality, through direct engagement with decision-makers, grasstops leaders, and coordination with movement partners to identify and executive on strategic opportunities.

Priorities

To effectively meet the challenges and immense opportunities before us, we are guided by five core priorities:
1. Ensure expeditious, effective and equitable implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, by working directly with federal agencies, states, communities, businesses and other partners.

2. Push the Biden Administration to go further, faster with additional, aggressive executive actions to fully reach the critical climate goal of cutting domestic greenhouse gas pollution in half by 2030 and reaching net-zero before mid-century.

3. Enhance state leadership on climate, jobs and justice by building and leveraging our new state program.

4. Defend the Inflation Reduction Act and climate progress in Congress, by beating back Republicans’ attempts to repeal the IRA and rollback Biden’s executive actions.

5. Identify, establish and develop our organizational & cultural opportunities, norms, systems, partnerships and resources

Evergreen’s roots rose out of Governor Jay Inslee’s campaign as a “climate candidate” for President in the 2020 election cycle. Evergreen has advanced Inslee’s detailed plan for: 100% clean energy standards, major investments in good jobs building clean energy, as well as a deep commitment to environmental justice and bringing the fossil fuel era to a close.

In 2021 & 2022 Evergreen was recommended by Giving Green as a top organization to support, championing us as a “nimble organization that is highly adept at timing its policy development and advocacy to the political climate.”

Evergreen is at the forefront of advancing bold federal policy that addresses the climate crisis—advocating for an all-out mobilization of resources to meet the most pressing issue of our time. Although we are a small and new organization, born out of the Inslee Presidential campaign, we have been nimble in our ability to advance a detailed federal policy agenda focused on sector-specific clean energy standards and major investments in infrastructure and clean energy jobs, all while centering environmental justice. Since our founding, we have played a pivotal role in the development of climate policy, with major influence shaping and advancing President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda.

Evergreen Collaborative (c3) and Evergreen Action (c4) have been elevated by several organizations, policymakers, and media outlets as one of the most effective climate groups per dollar donated. These recommendations reflect the outsized impact Evergreen has played in advancing climate policies through both legislation and executive action in 2021. Simply put - if you’re looking for a strong ROI on your philanthropic contribution, donate to Evergreen.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
