Agriculture for Africa

Discipline, Work, Solidarity

aka A4A   |   Davis, CA

Mission

Agriculture for Africa (A4A) was created after witnessing the COVID pandemic’s impact on joblessness, youth unrest and food security in West Africa. Rehabilitating Incarcerated Youth was launched in in Nkongsamba Principal Prison, Cameroon, to build the agricultural and entrepreneurial capacity of youth, instill confidence and leadership, create pathways to socio-economic reinsertion and reduce recidivism. After two years of working alongside two cohorts of incarcerated youth, we have a model poised for regional expansion and to include vulnerable girls, small-holder farmers, internally displaced people, and street and out-of-school youth.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Cameroon is facing a wide array of challenges including acute famine, rising violent extremism, political corruption, civil unrest, and crises resulting from climate change. As a result, the economy struggles to provide equitable opportunity leading to increased incarceration and recidivism rates. A4A works directly with incarcerated youth so to encourage their entrance into the agricultural economy, which makes up over 70% of Cameroon's economy. Our model has proven that, in providing a clear path for their futures and stimulating economic growth, recidivism rates are greatly reduced and productive community dynamics between the incarcerated and non-incarcerated grow.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Sports for Resilence

For incarcerated youth, sports help provide structure, enhance bonds, and keep them engaged while learning social skills and building self-esteem. Upon discussion and endorsement of the prison director of Nkongsamba, a trial sports component aimed to serve as a unifying force between prison populations was launched on September 3rd 2022 to be carried out weekly, for 3 months.

The program was wildly successful. Over 750 inmates and 40 guards took part in building bridges between these to populations, creating camaraderie through a sporting environment and identifying both talent and leadership. After the successes of the first week, the Sports for Resilience program was expanded to the female and male prisons, thus involving all inmates. It is hoped that this activity can be replicated in other prisons around Cameroon.
