What we aim to solve
The GRO Fund is working to build bold, evidence-based and community driven solutions to address poverty and to narrow the racial wealth gap.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
In Her Hands
In Her Hands (IHH) is a direct cash program. We provide an average monthly income floor of $850 for 650 women in three communities across the state - one urban, one suburban, and one rural. The women in our program make, independently, $14,500/year on average, have 1-2 children and hold $35,000 in debt. Although the majority (about 75%) of participants are working full or part time, a lack of stability in work schedules, financial emergencies, and parenting costs make it difficult to get ahead. Our program is an experiment in determining to what degree this instability itself contributes to keeping Georgians in poverty. Existing social safety nets are often difficult to navigate, short-term, and indirect or insufficient. This is especially true for Black women, who face greater economic challenges as well as greater barriers when seeking support.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The GRO Fund's flagship initiative is the In Her Hands guaranteed income initiative, which provides an average $850/month for two years to 654 women experiencing poverty in Georgia. We currently serve three communities: the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood of Atlanta; Southwest Georgia across Clay Randolph and Terrell Counties; and College Park.
The goals of the program are:
1. Support Black women experiencing financial insecurity in Georgia to achieve greater financial stability, overcome
wealth decelerators, and enable greater choice and agency.
2. Generate and disseminate insights to promote more racially inclusive, just, public policies in the U.S. by
examining understudied aspects of guaranteed income in the U.S., engaging communities and recipients in the design process, uplifting receipt voices and experience, and centering a lens of racial equity in the process.
The GRO Fund is seeking to expand the program to serve more women in Georgia.
