Breaking Barriers by Raising Readers

Miami, FL   |  www.upliftliteracy.org

Mission

Uplift Literacy’s mission is to maximize lifelong success for underserved children by improving their reading proficiency – at school, at home and in their communities. We believe that all children deserve the opportunity to develop proficient reading skills and achieve their full potential. By offering free services that promote and build early literacy skills to those who may not be able to afford it, we empower children and communities most in need. The ability to read is a human right, and we envision a community where all children have the tools needed to succeed in school and life.

After-School Tutoring

Evidence-based programs and effective reading instruction are used to improve and increase foundational literacy skills and reading success in children from underserved communities. Our tutors provide 40 minutes of high-quality and motivating instruction daily in the critical components of reading. Assessment data are used to determine each child’s needs, monitor progress, and inform reading interventions.

ReadingPals offers volunteers an opportunity to build meaningful relationships with young children, while helping them improve their social-emotional development and early literacy skills.

In Miami-Dade County, ReadingPals spend 1 hour per week working with students in grades K-3 from underserved communities. We partner with schools to empower children with the necessary literacy skills and resources to read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade, a milestone that is a significant indicator of a child’s future educational development. Uplift literacy provides free reading interventions and mentoring sessions to cultivate every child’s full potential and assist in the transition from “learning to read to reading to learn.”

Every student participating in our ReadingPals program receives a brand new, quality book every month of the school year to help build their at-home library and create a print-rich environment.

Our free book bin distribution program aims to provide underserved communities with easy access to diverse books. We achieve this by placing book bins in the waiting areas of local businesses, such as laundromats, barber shops, and pediatric offices. This approach ensures that children have access to books in a convenient and accessible way. Furthermore, by promoting a culture of reading within the community, parents and caregivers are encouraged to prioritize reading with their children. It is well-documented that children who have access to books achieve higher levels of academic success.
