What we aim to solve
Down syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal abnormalities, affecting 1 out of every 792 births. While many with Down syndrome will grow up to live happy, fulfilling lives, there are sometimes additional struggles due to the intellectual disabilities that come along with the diagnosis. These difficulties often lead to academic struggles, unemployment, and an overall lack of independence in their daily lives. Perhaps most significantly, those with Down syndrome, while typically very social, can struggle to make lasting friendships, mainly because of the stigma associated with the disability. Our vision is that together we will change perspectives through relationships built on shared experiences.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
PALS Summer Programs
PALS Summer Programs are weeklong overnight programs held at universities throughout the country. PALS Programs pairs young adults with and without Down syndrome to engage in immersive experiences together - to grow in independence, to tackle new challenges, and to build powerful friendships.
The Congratulations Project
To welcome newly diagnosed families to the Down syndrome community, campers write letters of congratulations. Over 600 letters have been distributed through this program.
